Why It Matters: Did you see the headline of this article? Carlos Condit is back maniacs! The former UFC interim welterweight champion looks to delve right back into title contention this evening as he steps into enemy territory to take on Thiago Alves in the main event of the evening. If you decide to skip out on most of this card, don't make the mistake of missing "The Natural Born Killer" taking on the "Pitbull."
What's Hot: Sure UFC Fight Night 67 is not the most stacked card we have ever seen, but fight fans have become accustomed to these sorts of events in Brazil. We may be missing out on some major names, but the plethora of prospects making their UFC debuts or sophomore appearances has to get you hyped for this evening. Tom Breese, Darren Till, Nicolas Dalby, Elizeu Zaleski, Damon Jackson, and Ericka Almeida are all highly touted potential future contenders!
What's Not: The main card is really weak, even for a Brazilian fight card. After the enticing main event, we have a solid co-main pitting top-10 featherweights against each other as Nik Lentz rematches Charles Oliveira. Prior to those two fights, we will have to sit through a handful of mediocre bouts that ultimately mean very little to their respective divisions. I can't say I am too excited to watch Ryan Jimmo vs Francimar Barroso. Ouch.
Original Card vs Actual Card:
As usual, the injury bug changed the landscape of UFC Fight Night 67, but we won't really miss out on much other than witnessing Gilbert Burns.
"Durinho" was slated to face off against Norman Parke on the main card, but an injury gave Francisco Trinaldo the opportunity to step in on short notice.
Lucas Martins stepped up to face Mirsad Bektic tonight after Renato Moicano was injured in late April.
Yan Cabral was pulled from the card due to dengue fever, and Alex Oliveira stepped up on short notice to take on KJ Noons.
Finally, Jessica Penne was going to battle Juliana Lima this evening, but UFC officials opted to pull her from the event and give her a title shot at UFC Fight Night 69 against Joanna Jędrzejczyk. Lima will now take on UFC debutant Ericka Almeida on UFC Fight Pass.
New Blood:
Tom Breese (vs. Luiz Dutra): "The Octopus" steps into the Octagon undefeated at 23-years old boasting a 7-0 record with seven finishes. The highly touted Brit has a very high ceiling, but he has yet to fight any name competition.
Ericka Almeida (vs. Juliana Lima): Another undefeated 7-0 fighter will debut right after Breese, as Ericka Almeida steps up on short notice to take on her Brazilian counterpart Juliana Lima. Almeida also has seven finishes, six of which have come via submission.
Nicolas Dalby vs. Elizeu Zaleski: We have regional MMA champions squaring off in Brazil tonight! Dalby is an uber-prospect from Copenhagen, Denmark, who has earned the Cage Warriors welterweight strap with 13 career victories among seven finishes. Zaleski is the Jungle Fight champion, and will step into the Octagon with a 14-4 record, boasting 13 finishes.
Darren Till (vs. Wendell Oliveira): As if we didn't have enough welterweight prospects debuting tonight, yet another undefeated Englishman will look to make a statement in Brazil. Till is an impressive 12-0 in his MMA career, earning 10 finishes in that timespan. Expect the Brit to look for his ninth career knockout this evening.
How The "Prelims" Look: While you won't find any major names on tonight's "Prelims," there are definitely a few bouts worth watching on both UFC Fight Pass and FOX Sports 1.
Fight fans should not miss the debuts of Tom Breese, Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos, and Nicolas Dalby, plus we will be treated to the highly touted Mirsad Bektic as he takes on Lucas Martins.
The "Prelims" main event is worth a watch as well, as Rony Jason looks to take off Damon Jackson's head in front of his home crowd.
Who Needs A Win Badly: This portion is reserved for fighters who could be fighting for their jobs today, rather than contenders or title challengers needing victory. Let's take a look at those who need to pull it together:
Ryan Jimmo (vs. Francimar Barroso): While Jimmo is 3-3 inside the Octagon exchanging wins and losses, "The Big Deal" could be fighting for his job tonight after being outspoken against UFC's Reebok deal. Coming off a submission loss to Ovince St. Preux, Jimmo needs to pick up a win in Brazil.
Interest Level: 6/10
For a Fight Night card in Brazil, this event is not half-bad.
Besides for the outstanding main event that will see the highly anticipated return of Carlos Condit as he fights former No. 1 contender Thiago Alves, this event features several top-notch prospects that could soon be ranked fighters in a handful of divisions.
While the only true consequential fight of the evening is the main event, there is a lot to see elsewhere at UFC Fight Night 67, and I for one am excited to watch the fists fly!
