Do you believe in Chris Weidman now?
"All American" successfully defended his Middleweight title last night (Sat., May 23, 2015) against Vitor Belfort in the co-main event of UFC 187, which took place inside MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
And he did it decisively ... again.
Indeed, after doubters (and haters) claimed his two wins over Anderson Silva were "flukes" -- and were somehow unimpressed with his unanimous decision over Lyoto Machida -- Weidman sealed the deal with an impressive finish of yet another decorated Brazilian.
Belfort appeared to get the early edge, punishing and overzealous Weidman along the fence after the champion chased him after a stumble. Weidman showed his toughness, firing back and securing a takedown as blood dripped from his busted forehead.
It was academic from that point forward.
Weidman unleashed a furious ground-and-pound assault, which Belfort could not escape despite repeated efforts to get back to his feet. He rolled to his belly, and then to his back, as Weidman continued to dole out the punishment. Eventually, the referee saw enough, calling a stop to the championship match via technical knockout in just about three minutes into the first frame.
