Ever since the Nevada State Athletic Commission banned Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) in mixed martial arts (MMA), the focus has been on how No. 1 Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) middleweight contender Vitor Belfort would perform without the supplements.
With TRT coursing through his veins, "The Phenom" reeled off three straight head kick knockouts in 2013 before earning a UFC title shot against Chris Weidman.
Once TRT was banned, Belfort was forced to withdraw from his initial title shot in order to have his body acclimate to training. Two injuries to Weidman left Belfort waiting on the sidelines even further, and now 19 months after his last fight, the Brazilian will get a chance to capture UFC gold in the co-main event of the UFC 187 pay-per-view, set to go down tonight (Sat., May 23, 2015) at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Belfort has complained in the lead-up to the fight that he has been tested far too many times, but at yesterday's weigh-ins (full replay here), "The All American" champ claimed Belfort was "still cheating" and vowed to make him pay for it.
His words to Joe Rogan:
"I left him alone with this whole drug test thing, but then we just found out during camp he had a 1200 testosterone score. I'm 10 years younger than him and he's got a way higher testosterone level. This guy is still cheating, I'm gonna make him pay for it tomorrow night."
I wouldn't say he has "left Vitor alone" about drug testing, but still a strong accusation from the champ!
No more injuries or delays, the fight goes down tonight!
