Cain Velasquez: Jon Jones super fight still a possibility

Nothing like a little optimism!

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez has been tied to former light heavyweight kingpin Jon Jones ever since the idea of a "super fight" between "Bones" and Anderson Silva went up in smoke (thanks to this).

But it's hard to imagine that fight coming together in light of recent events.

If Jones faces jail time -- and even if he doesn't -- there is no telling how long it will take the embattled star to make his mixed martial arts (MMA) return, after he was arrested on charges of felony hit-and-run last month in Albuquerque, New Mexico (details).

Still, Velasquez told ESPN.com that he's not ruling it out.

"It was all talk before but yeah, I definitely saw our paths crossing once or twice. I still think it's a possibility down the road when he comes back. As far as any legacy fight between us, I don't look at things that way. I just look at what's ahead of me. I don't think about, 'For my legacy, I need to do this, this and this.' I just focus on every fight and how to win that fight."

That said, Velasquez has his own work to do.

In addition to his title unification bout against Fabricio Werdum, which takes place in the UFC 188 pay-per-view (PPV) event next month in Mexico (more on that here), Velasquez has to prove he can stay healthy for an extended period of time, something he's struggled to do over the past few years.

Until then, file this under "fantasy match up."
