Despite the considerable hype prior to her contract signing, it doesn't sound like Holly Holm is any closer to a 135-pound title shot.
Instead, "The Preacher's Daughter" will likely square off against the venerable Marion Reneau at the upcoming UFC Fight Night 71 mixed martial arts (MMA) event on FOX Sports 1, locked and loaded for the Valley View Casino Center in San Diego, Calif., on July 15, 2015.
That's according to a report from FOX Sports.
Holm (8-0) lit up the regional circuit with her formidable boxing skills and was a long-sought after free agent. Partly because of her pugilistic skills, but mostly because women's bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey was running out of viable contenders.
That said, her UFC debut against Raquel Pennington, even in victory, did not scream "title contender."
She'll have a second chance to make a first impression against Reneau (6-1), who is now perfect in two trips to the Octagon. After turning away Alexis Dufresne at UFC 182 back in January, "Bruiser" choked out Jessica Andrade just over a month later in Brazil.
A win over Holm and she could very easily steal that future title shot.
UFC Fight Night 71 will be headlined by a heavyweight feature fight pitting old school vs. new, as former division champion Frank Mir tangles with the streaking Todd Duffee. Elsewhere on the card, Tony Ferguson collides with Josh Thomson in lightweight action.
