Is Lyoto Machida still relevant at 185 pounds?
We're about to find out, as "The Dragon" has signed on to fight dangerous division contender Yoel Romero at the upcoming UFC Fight Night 70 mixed martial arts (MMA) event, locked and loaded for June 27, 2015 inside Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida.
UFC announced the FOX Sports 1 booking on Friday.
Machida (22-6) came storming out of the 185-pound gate after dropping down from the light heavyweight division, racking up consecutive wins over Mark Munoz and Gegard Mousasi. Since then, the karateka is just 1-2 and coming off a lopsided beatdown at the hands of Luke Rockhold.
Out of the frying pan and into the fire.
Romero (9-1) flirted with a Ronaldo Souza fight on several occasions; however, injuries shelved that title eliminator bout and sent "The Soldier of God" -- winner of five straight with four knockouts -- into "The Dragon's" lair, where he could graduate to a division title fight.
Depending, of course, on what happens with "Jacare."
UFC Fight Night 70 will feature a co-main event pitting Brazilian standout Erick Silva opposite welterweight veteran Rick Story. Expect more fight announcements to start trickling in over the coming weeks.
In the meantime, early pick for "Machida vs. Romero?"
