Nate Diaz returns to welterweight, fights Matt Brown at UFC 189 this summer

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

After crushing the scale ahead of his 155-pound fight against Rafael dos Anjos at UFC on FOX 13 in Dec. 2014, Nate Diaz will return to the Welterweight division to take on Matt Brown at UFC 189, which takes place at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on July 11, 2015.

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) passed along the good news earlier this evening on its official website.

Good news, perhaps, for everyone but Diaz, who has had mixed results at 170 pounds, dropping back-to-back bouts to Dong Hyung Kim and Rory MacDonald back in 2011 before finally hitting his stride at 155 pounds.

In fact, Diaz reeled off three consecutive wins at Lightweight to earn a shot at then-division champion Benson Henderson, a match he would go on to lose via unanimous decision. And ever since, Diaz has never been the same, losing two of his next three bouts and picking fights he can't win against UFC execs at every turn outside the Octagon.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Brown, meanwhile, has hit a rough career stretch, losing a No. 1 contender eliminator match to current division champion, Robbie Lawler, and then dropping another decision to the man "Ruthless" defeated to win the crown, Johny Hendricks, his next time out.

"Immortal" still believes he can be a champion, but he will need to prove it against the always-game Diaz, who has proven consistently that he is perhaps the most inconsistent talent on the promotion's roster.

Who knows what will happen.

The stacked UFC 189 championship doubleheader features reigning featherweight champion Jose Aldo battling division No. 1 contender Conor McGregor, while the aforementioned Lawler puts his welterweight title on the line against aforementioned 170-pound wunderkind, MacDonald.
