What a wild turn of events ...

As a result of the shocking announcement on FOX Sports Live tonight that Jon Jones was stripped of his Light Heavyweight title and suspended indefinitely, a new UFC 187 main event has been booked.

Daniel Cormier, who lost a unanimous decision to Jones at UFC 182 in January, will step in to face Anthony Johnson for the now-vacant 205-pound title inside MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on May 23, 2015.

"Cormier, as soon as he heard it, said put me in," said company president Dana White. "He was blowing me and Lorenzo up as soon as he heard about this."

The No. 3-ranked contender was scheduled to face Ryan Bader in the main event at UFC Fight Night 68 on June 6, 2015, in New Orleans, La., but will now compete for the light heavyweight title for a second time this year.

Cormier gave a brief statement to MMAFighting:

"Make no mistake about it, this is a sad day for our sport. One of the best fighters of all time has found himself in trouble again. It sucks. Despite our differences, I truly wish the best for Jon and his family, and I know he can get through this. But in life, opportunity knocks, and it's up to you to answer the door. So as I've done time and time again, I'm answering the door. I will be in Vegas on May 23 -- you can count on me -- I will win the belt and then when Jon is ready to return, I will be happy to give him a shot at my belt."

Johnson, the No. 1-ranked division contender, will now have to prepare for a new opponent with the fight less than one month away.

So much for waiting a year.
