Only a few hours after surrendering to authorities (see his mugshot pic here), Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones is out of jail.
Jones posted $2,500 bail on Monday evening and was released a little after 10 PM, according to Bernalillo County Metro Detention Center (MDC) release records.
A felony arrest warrant was issued on Monday afternoon for Jones' involvement in a hit-and-run accident that left a pregnant women -- now identified as Vanessa Sonnenberg -- with a broken arm and wrist. According to the Albuquerque Police Department report (read full report here), Jones allegedly ran a red light and crashed into Sonnenberg's car and fled the scene of the accident.
Witnesses said he then ran back to grab a stack of cash from the car before running away once again and hopping a fence.
An off-duty police officer identified Jones at the scene. Paperwork belonging to Jones was found in the 2015 silver Buick SUV, as was a marijuana pipe with marijuana inside of it.
Jones had not been in contact with Albuquerque authorities from the time they sought him for questioning on Sunday evening and all through Monday until his lawyer made arrangements for his surrender last night.
UFC released a statement on Sunday saying it was "aware" of the situation, but would "reserve further comment until more information is available."
After Jones arrest on Monday, MMAMania reached out to UFC, but the promotion said it would not be commenting at this time.
UFC's No.1-ranked pound-for-pound fighter is still scheduled to face Anthony Johnson at UFC 187 on May 23, 2015, but that may very well change with Monday's arrest. The light heavyweight's last brush with law enforcement was in May 2012 when he was arrested for DUI.
However, back in January, Jones tested positive for cocaine in an "out-of-competition" drug test prior to his unanimous decision victory over Daniel Cormier at UFC 182.
