Police: Felony arrest warrant issued for UFC champ Jon Jones

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) light heavyweight titleholder Jon Jones may soon find himself under arrest.

That's because the Albuquerque police department is in the process of obtaining a warrant for "Bones," and have upgraded his original hit-and-run charge from misdemeanor to felony, after it was revealed a pregnant victim of his alleged involvement was left with a broken arm.

Combat sports attorney Eric Magraken breaks down the difference in charges:

Misdemeanor charges are reserved for cases "where the accident does not result in great bodily harm." If the case does involve "great bodily harm" it can lead to a fourth degree felony with a penalty of up to "eighteen months imprisonment." If it can further be proven that a defendant "knowingly" failed to stay at the scene, the charges can be upgraded to a third-degree felony with penalties increasing up to three years of imprisonment.

I think it's safe to call the UFC 187 main event "in jeopardy."

As of now, the promotion has yet to issue a ruling on the future of its May 23 pay-per-view (PPV) event in Las Vegas, Nevada, but will undoubtedly move swiftly once Jones is taken into custody or turns himself in. As of now, authorities have been unable to reach him.

Jones remains innocent until proven guilty.
