Yoel Romero was forced to bow out of his much-anticipated middleweight showdown against Ronaldo Souza one week before they were set to tango at last weekend's (Sat., April 18, 2015) UFC on FOX 15 card in Newark, New Jersey.
That's the second time their bout was nixed.
But if all goes well with the rehab of Romero's torn meniscus -- one he refused to have surgery on -- "Soldier of God" and "Jacare" could finally meet inside the Octagon this July.
"I spoke to his manager and he elected to not have surgery," according to UFC Tonight's Ariel Helwani. "He has a torn meniscus. He hopes to return in July and would like to still fight Jacare."
Souza remained on the FOX card and made quick work of last-minute replacement Chris Camozzi. Despite the impressive submission win (see it again here), Souza likely won't be in line for the next shot at the middleweight title.
And he has Luke Rockhold to thank for that.
But if he does get re-booked to face Romero -- who was last seen beating the brakes of Tim Kennedy at UFC 178 -- and manages to get the "W," there is no way he can be denied his much-desired championship fight.
The same can be said for Yoel, too, who has won all five of his fights under the UFC umbrella.
