After suffering a late-round submission defeat courtesy of Frankie Edgar his last time out, top-ranked Featherweight contender Cub Swanson needed to get back in the win column tonight (Sat., April 18, 2015) against Max Holloway -- winner of five straight -- if he wanted to compete for a 145-pound title anytime soon.
And it didn't happen. Not even close.
Holloway, sporting a considerable height and length advantage, was able to dictate the pace of the opening minutes with his legs, as well as punches when he decided to dive in for action. In fact, Swanson began to show signs of damage over his eye mid-way through the match.
Swanson was able to land counter shots here and there, but it was clear early that Holloway came to fight. He landed a slick spinning back kick to Swanson's body, and then a head kick -- and a right hand -- as Swanson seemingly had few answers.
With 10 seconds to go, both fighters went nuts, with Swanson eating a hook while on a knee and then responding with haymakers of his own, one of which appeared to come after the bell (but was blocked).
Swanson came out with a little more pep in his step for the second stanza, perhaps realizing he is lost the opening frame. But, Holloway continued to do his thing -- moving, striking and bolting before Swanson could put together anything. He attempted to get his hands on Holloway, but nothing materialized.
With about two minutes to go in the round, Swanson missed on like four straight strikes, prompting Holloway to smile and do a little clowning before going back to doing his thing. Swanson was able to finally deliver a combination, but Holloway responded with a flying knee in close that appeared to stun him.
Holloway was unable to take advantage, though, as the round came to a close.
Likely down two rounds to zero, Swanson needed a Hail Mary one-hit quitter to swing a win in his balance, but it never came despite his best efforts. Holloway continued to do implement his gameplan with impunity, hurting Swanson bad with a combination and then almost finishing him with an arm-triangle choke with about three minutes to go in the match.
Swanson, somehow, was able to escape and fight on, but Holloway hurt him again moments after and then immediately angled for a guillotine choke as Swanson was on his back. Swanson struggled to defend, and he did for about 30 seconds, before Holloway reconfigured his grip and compelled a tap.
Total domination!
