Why It Matters: In 14 major FOX shows, UFC brass has delivered some scintillating action, making for a sensational series of events dating back to the initial FOX show way back in November, 2011. A bit under four years later, UFC on FOX 15 takes center stage in New Jersey, and UFC officials have once again stacked the deck. With two potential No. 1 contender's bouts on the main card, what more could a fight fan ask for?
What's Hot: Obviously the main event of the evening is the driving force of UFC on FOX 15, but the rest of the event is definitely set up to be a night to remember. Fight fans will be treated to a banging featherweight contest between Max Holloway and Cub Swanson, as well as a highly anticipated women's strawweight bout between Paige VanZant and Felice Herrig, both on the main card.
What's Not: Losing Yoel Romero was a huge detriment for tonight's event, and even though UFC brass could only manage to find Chris Camozzi as a last second replacement to rematch Ronaldo Souza, at least fight fans will be treated to another electric performance from "Jacare." Or so we think.
Original Card vs Actual Card:
UFC on FOX 15 had its fair share of injuries, but UFC brass did a solid job of keeping the card intact as fighters dropped like flies.
Surging lightweight contender Paul Felder was set to face off against Jim Miller at the event, but an injury to Felder gave Beneil Dariush the chance to fight the UFC veteran on short notice.
Kenny Robertson was looking to extend his winning streak to four straight before an injury forced him out of his scheduled bout against George Sullivan. With Robertson's exit, UFC brass called upon Tim Means to take the fight on short notice.
Nick Catone and Vitor Miranda were set to square off tonight, but an injury to Catone forced him to retire from mixed martial arts (MMA), and the Brazilian was injured as well, scratching the fight altogether.
Finally, Yoel Romero tore his meniscus, forcing him out of his co-main event bout against "Jacare" Souza. As previously mentioned, Chris Camozzi will take "Soldier of God's" place.
New Blood: After UFC Fight Night 64 last weekend saw the debut of 10 fighters, UFC on FOX 15 will have no fighter step into the Octagon for the first time.
How The "Prelims" Look: After several mediocre "Prelims" in a row, UFC on FOX 15 delivers the goods. Here is a quick rundown of some of the talent that will be featured early on in Newark tonight: Aljamain Sterling, Tim Means, Beneil Dariush, Jim Miller, Ovince St. Preux, Diego Brandao, Corey Anderson, and more!
This is a really strong "Prelims" event, with several consequential bouts. Jim Miller vs Beneil Dariush, Aljamain Sterling vs Takeya Mizugaki, and Ovince St. Preux vs Patrick Cummins will all spotlight a potential future contender.
If you can't catch all the "Prelims," make sure to at least watch "The Funk Master" live, as I believe Sterling has a true opportunity to become a dangerous contender in the 135 pound division.
Who Needs A Win Badly: This portion is reserved for fighters who could be fighting for their jobs today, rather than contenders or title challengers needing victory. Let's take a look at those who need to pull it together:
-- Diego Brandao (vs. Jimy Hettes): The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) season 14 winner could be fighting for his UFC roster spot tonight as he takes on Jimy Hettes on the "Prelims." While a loss wouldn't guarantee a pink slip from UFC brass, Brandao definitely does not want to lose three straight fights.
Interest Level: 8/10
UFC on FOX 15 is a very strong card in my opinion, and there are several fights tonight that I am very much looking forward to.
The main event is truly one of the best stylistic match-ups in quite some time, and I am finding it increasingly difficult to choose a winner between Machida and Rockhold.
As if the main event couldn't carry a weak card all on its own, fight fans will be treated to the wonderful violence of Cub Swanson, Max Holloway, Paige VanZant, Felice Herrig, and that is all on the main card!
Tonight should be a wild ride, so strap in, and let's have some fun!
