Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) strawweights Joanne Calderwood and Maryna Moroz clashed yesterday (April 11, 2015) at UFC Fight Night 64 inside the Krakow Arena in Krakow, Poland.
With the division pretty wide open, Calderwood's undefeated record and high ranking put her in an excellent position. If she managed to earn an impressive win,"JoJo" could be fighting for UFC gold next.
On the other hand, Moroz has only been a professional fighter for about a year and a half. While the odds were stacked against her, Moroz had the opportunity to immediately become a contender in the new division.
She did just that.
The two fighters wasted little time before engaging, as Calderwood attacked with kicks while Moroz looked to land counter punches. After the initial wild exchange, it seemed that Calderwood was settling into her range and landing the more efficient strikes.
Then, Moroz connected with a clean punch and really upped her aggression. With one long combination, she forced Calderwood into the fence. Calderwood grabbed a clinch, but Moroz countered by pulling guard and latching onto an armbar.
Calderwood had an opportunity to pull away, but Moroz was quick to get her legs heavy on the head. "JoJo" attempted to stack the Polish grappler, but Moroz had already locked the submission in.
It only took 90 seconds.
This was an incredible debut for the very young Moroz. Not only did she hold her own on the feet with the experienced Muay Thai fighter, but she actually stunned Calderwood with her punches.
After hurting her opponent, Moroz showed excellent killer instinct by immediately bringing the fight to her world. Calderwood is a strong striker, but her grappling is clearly a weak spot in her game, and Moroz was quick to capitalize on that. Against more well-rounded opposition, her willingness to pull guard could cost her, but it worked gorgeously here.
Following this quick victory, Moroz is now a top ten fighter. While she called out Joanna Champion immediately after her victory, it's still a bit early for that. Instead, she should face off with the winner of next week's bout between Paige VanZant and Felice Herrig.
This was a devastatingly poor showing by Calderwood. On the feet, she was blasted before she ever really got comfortable, and that was supposed to be her area of expertise. Once the fight moved onto the canvas, it was clear how outmatched Calderwood was in terms of grappling.
Expect Calderwood to drop down the rankings significantly after this loss, as Moroz was thoroughly unknown before this fight. For her next bout, a scrap with Angela Hill would make sense.
At UFC Fight Night 64, Maryna Moroz shocked her opponent with a quick armbar victory. How high can the Polish fighter climb in the strawweight division?
