What's next for Demian Maia? A 'fight for the belt' following UFC Fight Night 62 win over Ryan LaFlare

After a performance like that? As if...

Jason Silva-USA TODAY Sports

After an enthralling undercard that saw nine finishes in 11 bouts, UFC Fight Night 62 was capped off by a 25-minute snoozefest between welterweight contenders Demian Maia and Ryan LaFlare this past Saturday night (March 21, 2015), live on FOX Sports 1 from inside Ginasio do Maracanazinho in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Check out the highlights here.

Although Maia won his 14th UFC fight, he gassed badly in the final frame and nearly let LaFlare pull off a seemingly impossible upset. With the 37-year-old grappler certainly on the downswing of his career, he told the MMA media (via MMAJunkie) that he hopes to fight for UFC gold once again before hanging up his gloves for good.

"The most main and co-main events I can do, that's very important to me. I know I have a few years left in my career, and I want to have great years in these fights that are left for me, to have the chance to fight for the belt once again."

As if we need to see that again.

Currently sitting at No. 7 in the welterweight division (see the rankings here), Maia will need to put on a much more impressive performance his next time out if he really hopes to fight for the title. With Johny Hendricks, Robbie Lawler, Rory MacDonald, and Tyron Woodley at a logjam near the top of the heap, the jiu-jitsu ace better start calling someone out before it's too late.

Any suggestions?
