In case you forgot, Demian Maia is a bad man.
Especially if you let him take you to the ground and work his magic. The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) welterweight -- once good enough to challenge Anderson Silva for middleweight gold -- will try to prove he's also worthy of taking on the best the 170-pound division has to offer when he returns from an extended layoff this weekend in front of his hometown fans.
But before he laces up the gloves against welterweight stalwart Ryan LaFlare, in a five-round main event set for Saturday night (March 21, 2015) inside Maracanazinho Gymnasium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the promotion is taking us back to late 2012, when Maia (19-6) ran through the venerable Rick Story like he was some chump they pulled from the crowd.
Take a look.
When someone squeezes your neck so hard that blood shoots from your nose, it's a pretty good indication that you should be tapping out as quickly as possible.
Gross. But impressive!
The Brazilian will need that same type of offense if he hopes to wear down LaFlare (11-0), who has yet to taste defeat in his combat sports career. While he's not the prolific finisher he was on the regional circuit, the standout wrestler has the chops to hang with anyone in the division.
Something we learned in his John Howard fight last April:
Will it be "Doomsday" for Maia?
