While the mixed martial arts (MMA) community is up in arms regarding Anderson Silva's positive test for steroids in a pre-fight drug screening for UFC 183, it seems most everyone else is completely ambivalent to Nick Diaz's third failed test for marijuana.
Even Diaz's longtime coach Cesar Gracie told MMAFighting that Diaz's test was essentially expected:
"It's not a shocker. His DNA is THC, let's face it. No one is surprised by that. I'm disappointed by it. It's just a distraction. It sucks. I don't want any distractions. The guy is such a brilliant fighter. I'd rather be talking about how skilled he is."
Ironically, the true distraction in regards to Diaz's test is the fact that Anderson Silva -- who many consider to be the GOAT -- tested positive for steroids, thus making Diaz's positive test for marijuana seem miniscule in comparison.
Ultimately, Diaz tested positive with 300 ng/ml in his system, which is double over the limit of 150 ng/ml the commission allows. Even though the Stockton native has a medical marijuana card in California, the NSAC does not allow the drug to be used in competition -- which is deemed to be 12 hours before or after the fight.
Just like "The Spider", Diaz is on a temporary suspension from the NSAC, and will need to be at a hearing sometime in March or April for further disciplinary action.
