Gilbert Melendez would 'absolutely' fight Conor McGregor in UFC lightweight bout

But, would "Notorious" be biting off more than he can chew?

Bob DeChiara-USA TODAY Sports

Conor McGregor has taken the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) featherweight division by storm, winning his first five fights in impressive fashion and earning a crack at division champion, Jose Aldo.

With his non-apologetic brash style and attitude, "Notorious" has brought major attention to himself and sports channels, as well as the 145-pound weight class.

During a recent Q & A (video here), McGregor stated that the ultimate plan was to wipe out the remaining contenders at 145 pounds before jumping up to lightweight and doing the same. That's music to Gilbert Melendez's ears, as "El Nino" told FOX Sports that he would gladly take a bout against the scrappy Irishman.

Check it out:

"The reason why it would be welcome to the lightweight division is it would make things interesting. I would love to lock horns with this guy, I'd be up for that. I think he has some pretty good size for his weight class. He's a big boy. I think he can carry the weight and hang with the muscle at 155 for his size. I don't know if he's ready for the top level at 155, but I believe he has the size to go into it. He's a young kid and he's only going to get better. I could see him doing it. If someone believes in themselves that much, it's always a possibility. If I got offered the fight, would I take it? Absolutely."

McGregor is no stranger to the 155-pound division -- he has plenty of fights in the weight class under his belt, including winning the CWFC lightweight title in 2012 in his home country of Ireland.

Before "Notorious" packs on the pounds, he has his toughest test to date ahead of him as he is gearing up to take on the aforementioned Jose Aldo in the main event of UFC 189 on July 11, 2015, in Las Vegas, Nevada (details). Melendez, meanwhile, is lobbying for a bout against former Bellator MMA lightweight champ, Eddie Alvarez, at UFC 187, which goes down in Mexico City this summer.

But, the way things have been going, anything is possible these days.
