UFC Fight Night 63: Al Iaquinta steps into co-main event bout against Jorge Masvidal on short notice

Guess that means no senoritas for Iaquinta just yet...

Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports

It appears everyone on Ultimate Fighting Championship's (UFC) roster wants to follow in Donald Cerrone's footsteps.

Just two days following his (technical) knockout victory over the notoriously durable Joe Lauzon on the UFC 183 pay-per-view (highlights here), Al Iaquinta has opted to step in on short notice to take on No. 13 ranked lightweight Jorge Masvidal in the co-main event of UFC Fight Night 63 which is set to go down on April 4, 2015 on FOX Sports 1 inside the Patriot Center in Fairfax, Virginia.

"Gamebred" was initially scheduled to take on former lightweight champion Benson Henderson, but "Smooth" opted to move up to the 170-pound division in order to save the UFC Fight Night 60 card on just about two weeks' notice. Henderson will now be facing off against the highly touted prospect Brandon Thatch in the main event on Valentine's Day (Feb. 14, 2015).

With Masvidal losing both Henderson and his initial opponent in Bobby Green -- due to a very graphic injury -- "Raging" Al opted to step in and fight yet another major test in the stacked lightweight division.

After a rocky start to his Octagon career that saw him lose The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) Live finale to Michael Chiesa, Iaquinta has since gone 6-1, including his most recent three fight TKO streak. Needless to say, if Iaquinta is able to finish Masvidal in April, the TUF veteran will skyrocket up the rankings.
