UFC 188 co-main event to feature Gilbert Melendez vs Eddie Alvarez in Mexico

Andrew Richardson-USA TODAY Sports

Ask and you shall receive ... just don't say you didn't hear it here, first.

Two top-ranked Latino Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Lightweight standouts, Gilbert Melendez and Eddie Alvarez, will collide in the co-main event of UFC 188, which takes place inside Mexico City Arena in Mexico City, Mexico, on June 13, 2015.

The world's leading mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion confirmed the fantastic 155-pound match up via earlier this afternoon.

Melendez (ranked No. 4) is a former two-time UFC title challenger, losing out to Ben Henderson in his first go-round via close split decision back in April 2013 and then meeting current champion Anthony Pettis' guillotine choke in round two of their UFC 181 co-main event in Dec. 2014.

"El Nino" is a former Strikeforce champion, which is where/when his beef with Alvarez (ranked No. 10) -- his Bellator MMA contemporary at the time -- was born three years ago.

Alvarez's road to the Octagon was circuitous and litigious, and his long-awaited promotional debut at UFC 178 didn't go his way in Sept. 2014 thanks to the red-hot Donald Cerrone. The same "Cowboy" who filled his spot on two weeks notice when Alvarez was forced out of the UFC Fight Night 59 co-main event against the aforementioned Henderson in Jan. 2015 (more details here).

Now apparently healed and healthy, Alvarez will get another opportunity to make his UFC mark, and it won't get any easier against a fine fighter such as Melendez.

UFC 188 will feature a Heavyweight main event between division champion, Cain Velasquez, against interim kingpin, Fabricio Werdum (more details here). More bouts will be added to the pay-per-view (PPV) event in the coming days and weeks, which we will pass along as soon as possible.
