Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez will look to unify the 265-pound titles when he battles interim straphanger Fabricio Werdum in the UFC 188 pay-per-view (PPV) event, booked for June 13, 2015 inside Mexico City Arena.
Well, that's the plan anyway.
Velasquez (13-1) hasn't competed since beating the brakes off Junior dos Santos in late 2013, for the simple fact that he's been unable to stay healthy. After undergoing shoulder surgery, he was expected to fight Werdum (14-5-1) at UFC 180, also in Mexico, but then blew out his knee.
"Vai Cavalo" went on to win the interim belt by stopping Mark Hunt.
If Velasquez is unable to make it to UFC 188 due to injury, it's likely the promotion would strip him of the title. Werdum, meanwhile, has captured five in a row with three finishes. Prior to finishing the "Super Samoan" last November, the Brazilian outclassed Travis Browne on FOX.
It will be interesting to see how the Velasquez layoff affects the opening line.
No other bouts have been announced for UFC 188; however, you can expect that to change sooner, rather than later.
Stay tuned.
