UFC 187 fight card: Jon Jones vs Anthony Johnson, Chris Weidman vs Vitor Belfort to headline May 23 event

Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports

This year's Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Memorial Day weekend card is shaping up to be one of the biggest of the year ... one filled to the brim with star power.

On Wednesday's edition of "UFC Tonight" on FOX Sports One, two title fights were announced for the pay-per-view (PPV) card from MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on May 23, 2015:

Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones vs. Anthony Johnson and Middleweight champion Chris Weidman vs. Vitor Belfort.

Jones will look to defend his 205-pound belt for a ninth time and the second time this year, as "Bones" already defeated Daniel Cormier via unanimous decision at UFC 181 (not without cocaine-fueled controversy, though).

Johnson, meanwhile, defeated Alexander Gustafsson via technical knockout three weeks later at UFC on FOX 14 to emerge as the No. 1-ranked contender for UFC's Light Heavyweight title. Johnson, a former Welterweight, has won nine straight since he was released after his loss to Belfort at UFC 142, winning all three fights since his return to the promotion.

Weidman and Belfort were supposed to lock horns at UFC 184, which takes place on Feb. 28, 2015, but the fight was postponed because of the 185-pound champion's rib injury suffered during training. Weidman will seek his third-straight title defense and to remain undefeated in his career.

Belfort, on the other hand, most recently competed on Nov. 9, 2013, scoring a technical knockout victory over Dan Henderson. "The Phenom" is currently on a three-fight win streak.

In addition to those two marquee match ups, Khabib Nurmagomedov will take on Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone in a Lightweight contest on UFC 187's PPV main card. Former Heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski will take on No. 3-ranked Travis Browne and, in Flyweight action, two former title challengers, Joseph Benavidez and John Moraga, will clash in a pivotal divisional showdown.

Looking good!
