Rafael dos Anjos (24-7) absolutely mowed down Donald Cerrone (28-7-1) to defend his UFC Lightweight title for the first time earlier tonight (Sat., Dec. 19, 2015) at UFC on FOX 17 at Amway Center in Orlando, Florida.
Dos Anjos, 31, finished off Cerrone in the first round to win via technical knockout. dos Anjos has now won four fights in a row, improving to 14-5 in UFC. The champion defeated Cerrone once before by unanimous decision back at UFC Fight Night 27 in Aug. 2013.
The official stoppage in the rematch tonight came at 1:06 of the opening round.
"I'm so happy. I just proved that I'm at the top of this division to stay," dos Anjos told Joe Rogan after the bout ended.
dos Anjos landed a huge kick to the body early on, which badly hurt Cerrone, and then uncorked a barrage of strikes against the fence. "Cowboy" could only cover up in defense of the onslaught of punches being unleashed upon him. He survived briefly, but dos Anjos kept on coming. And when the fight went to the ground, the champion poured on big strikes until referee Herb Dean stepped in to wave it off.
It was a huge win and tremendous performance by the Brazilian champion in his first title defense since defeating Anthony Pettis to win the 155-pound title last March at UFC 185.
Meanwhile, another crushing loss to Cerrone, who never had a chance after the first body kick landed and just got run over in his first-ever UFC title fight. The 32-year-old veteran had won eight straight fights prior to tonight's main event. He now falls to 15-4 in UFC's Lightweight division.
