Top-ranked Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Featherweight contenders Frankie Edgar and Chad Mendes clashed last night (Dec. 11, 2015) at The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 22 Finale inside "The Chelsea" at The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Prior to this bout, Edgar had won four straight over some very strong competition. Though both men were overshadowed by UFC 194's massive main event, Edgar was looking to make a statement here.

Similarly, this was an opportunity for Mendes to get back in the immediate title picture. A win over Edgar would be huge for him, and it would definitely help the Californian to earn another shot at Octagon gold.

Instead, Edgar undoubtedly earned his own title opportunity.

Working at distance, Mendes landed the first significant strikes of the fight, landing a few seriously hard inside and outside low kicks. However, both men were landing shots, as Edgar notably countered an uppercut with a nice right hand.

Then, all hell broke loose.

Mendes missed with a right hand and looked to follow up with a left hook. As he shifted his weight, Edgar countered with a beautiful left hook, which landed flush as Mendes moved into the punch.

Mendes went down hard, and a couple follow up punches sealed the deal.

This was a spectacular win for Edgar. Despite all of his skill, Edgar has never been known as a power puncher. In this fight, he flipped that idea on its head, landing a picture-perfect left hook that shut his opponent's lights off.

Just another dangerous wrinkle in the New Jersey-native's game.

There's not much more to breakdown here. Edgar and Mendes were trading at a good clip, and Edgar caught Mendes with an accurate and powerful strike.

Even at the highest level, that's all it takes.

After this win, Edgar's title shot cannot be denied. It simply must happen. There's no doubt the he deserves the winner of Aldo vs McGregor, and his chances against either have never looked better.

This is a very rough loss for Mendes, who has now lost three of his last four. Admittedly, his losses come to the top three fighters in the division -- and the sole win is over number five -- but it's still not a good situation for Mendes.

From a technical stand point, Mendes didn't make any real mistakes. He was a bit anxious to trade, but he was thought to have a big power advantage. Additionally, his low kicks were a smart choice, as they were landing quite hard.

He simply got caught hard.

As I see it, Mendes has two real options. In the past, Mendes has mentioned that he could likely make Bantamweight, and now seems like the time to try it out. Alternatively, Mendes could take a step back in competition, destroy a few men ranked below him, and be back in fights with highly ranked foes within a year or so.

Last night, Frankie Edgar shocked the world by knocking his opponent out in the first round. Can Edgar capture a UFC title in his second weight class?
