In an important and pivotal Featherweight match up, Frankie Edgar (21-4-1) came though in a huge and decisive way.
Edgar, 34, knocked out Chad Mendes (17-4) in the main event at The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 22 Finale last night (Dec. 11, 2015) at "The Chelsea" at The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The fight was highly competitive and even for the opening couple of minutes, with Mendes landing some nasty low kicks on Edgar in attempt to slow down his movement. But "The Answer" caught Mendes with a huge left hook that landed across the nose of Mendes, flooring the No. 3-ranked UFC Featherweight. Referee Big John McCarthy jumped in to wave off the contest as Mendes was face down on the canvas.
The official time of the stoppage came at 2:28 of the very first round.
"This was a big one for me," Edgar told Jon Anik after the win. "I thank God I'm blessed with such a great team and family. Three finishes in my last five fights. I'm ready if someone doesn't show up tomorrow."
It was a huge win by the No.2-ranked Edgar, who could earn a 145-pound title shot now that he has won five in a row in the division. Edgar is now 5-1 since dropping down from the Lightweight division.
Meanwhile, it was a devastating loss for Mendes, who was coming off a knockout loss to Conor McGregor at UFC 189. Mendes is now 8-4 in UFC.
