Sorry folks, not the sort of news I like to pass along during a busy fight weekend.
ONE Championship flyweight Yang Jian Bing, who was recently hospitalized and unable to attend this week's weigh in event, died on Friday morning after his bout was canceled for the promotion's "Spirit of Champions" mixed martial arts (MMA) event in Manila.
He was just 21 years old.
Published reports suggest the Beijing native -- 2-1 under the ONE banner and 5-1 overall -- passed as a result of complications from weight cutting, though his cause of death (cardiopulmonary failure) is still being investigated and a formal announcement is expected in the coming days.
"There is nothing more profoundly tragic and sad than when a member of the ONE Championship family, current or past, passes away," said Victor Cui, CEO of ONE Championship. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and loved ones of Yang Jian Bing. We will work closely with the family and offer all the support they need in any way we can during this very difficult time."
A sad day for MMA.
