Prior to the UFC 193 pay-per-view (PPV) event, which took place last Saturday night (Nov. 14, 2015) in Melbourne, Australia, I made one of my typical idiotic predictions for the main event between Ronda Rousey and Holly Holm, suggesting that no one outside of Team Jackson-Winkeljohn was picking "The Preacher's Daughter."
Sounds like it was the other way around.
"Just like Rousey, we got absolutely smashed," William Hill spokesperson Tim Ashworth told Zack Jones, Editor in Chief of Sportsbook Review. "We had more than double the amount of people place bets on the Holm upset."
In addition, Golden Nugget Casino told Jones the betting was so lopsided, it lost everything it won on college football, while BetOnline's Dave Mason said it was the biggest loss they ever suffered on a fighting event, with 93-percent of bettors laying cash Holm.
Most grabbed the line at +850 before the price went down.
Holm turned the mixed martial arts (MMA) world upside down with a stunning, second-round knockout (head kick) over the previously-undefeated Rousey (watch it), whose violent rise to super stardom created an aura of invincibility. It also didn't help that her opponent's previous two wins under the UFC banner failed to make any highlight reels.
I guess Holm was saving her best for last.
Soon after the smoke cleared, UFC President Dana White called for an immediate rematch, which could depend on how long it takes Rousey to recover. While details about her condition are a bit sketchy, "Rowdy" -- who refuses to show her face in public -- drew a potential six-month suspension for injuries sustained "Down Under."
Interestingly enough, Rousey (-147) is still favored to win her second go-round with Holm (+133).
