A Lightweight tournament had been in the works for World Series of Fighting (WSOF) for some time. And thanks to a recent announcement, we know the place (Comerica Theatre in Phoenix, Arizona), date (Nov. 20, 2015), time (9 p.m. ET on NBC Sports Network) and field of eight competitors.
The winner of this short and grueling tournament will earn a future title shot against reigning 155-pound champion Justin Gaethje, even though one competitor, Luis "Baboon" Palomino, has already had that honor twice.
The quarterfinal brackets have not yet been announced, but to get a third shot at Gaethje he'll have to win several fights in one night. The packed field includes Palomino, Brian Foster, Mike Ricci, Islam Mamedov, Brian "The Bandit" Cobb, Jorge "Macaco" Patino, Joao "The Brazilian Samurai" Zeferino and Rich Patishnock.
It's worth noting that Patishnock and Cobb have also both faced the undefeated Gaethje in previous bouts.
WSOF President Ray Sefo had these thoughts:
"We are excited to roll out our first-ever, one-night tournament filled with some of MMA’s top lightweight fighters, and to distinguish a new number one contender in this weight class that has been growing aggressively and is packed with world-class talent."
Aside from Palomino, the man with the most difficult road ahead may be Foster, who like Palomino just competed at WSOF 23 in September, but Foster has the advantage of having won by knockout in 32 seconds.
