More details have emerged regarding the arrest of former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) lightweight and welterweight champion BJ Penn, who was taken into custody last Saturday night (Jan. 17, 2015) after allegedly getting "inebriated" and brawling with his buddy, Kuuipo Mokiao, in a hotel parking lot.
Get the initial report here.
Mokiao claims Penn's assault -- which came after a night of good times at Kauhale's Bar in Kihei -- sent him to the emergency room at Maui Memorial Medical Center with a fractured left eye socket, according to Hawaii News Now, while Penn suffered a minor cut to his right eye.
The Hawaiian was later arrested for second-degree assault, but then released shortly thereafter pending a police investigation.
Penn (16-10-2) walked away from mixed martial arts (MMA) after a technical knockout loss to Frankie Edgar at The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 19 Finale in July 2014. Losing to "The Answer" marked his third straight defeat, dating back to early 2011.
Expect more details on Penn's arrest, as well as any future legal proceedings, to emerge over the next few days. "The Prodigy," of course, is innocent until proven guilty.
