Can't say I'm surprised.
Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) featherweight Charles Oliveira was unable to make weight for his UFC Fight Night 50 rematch against Nik Lentz, coming in four pounds heavy after a viral infection threw a monkey wrench into his plans to cut weight.
Not that it mattered.
Oliveira has now been removed from the card altogether and his "Carny" do-over has been scrapped. Since there is not enough time to find Lentz a replacement on just a few hours notice, these two will have to wait until the next event -- or longer -- before settling their score.
Oliveira, who was getting over a viral infection he contracted in Brazil, had a relapse earlier this week and missed weight for the bout Thursday, coming in at 150 pounds. He did not attempt to weigh in again. This morning, the Brazilian fell ill, and after being seen by a doctor he was pulled from the bout.
Lentz will be paid both his "show" and "win" money, but the Brazilian won't be getting a dime.
UFC had to cancel a pair of contests just last week, also precipitated by weight-cutting fails, when Henry Cejudo and Renan Barao were yanked from the UFC 177 event in Sacramento. The difference here is that Oliveira was legitimately ill and forced from the card through no fault of his own.
Get well soon, Mr. "Do Bronx."
