War Machine denied bail in Las Vegas, new charges filed in Christy Mack assault include attempted murder

Twitter

Embattled mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter Jon Koppenhaver -- who legally changed his name to "War Machine" back in 2008 -- appeared before a Las Vegas judge earlier today (Sept. 3, 2014) to answer for felony assault charges against ex-girlfriend and "Sin City" porn star Christy Mack last month in Nevada.

The 32-year-old welterweight was eventually captured on Aug. 15 in California (see his mugshot here) and was denied bail at today's arraignment. His amended complaint is 31 counts (lewdness count dropped) including two counts of attempted murder.

Koppenhaver plead not guilty.

Thanks to the success of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) reality show, Koppenhaver rose to fame under the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) banner, but was released after just two fights, forcing him to ply his trade on the regional and international fight circuit.

That's in addition to his previous legal troubles, which landed Koppenhaver behind bars in early 2012.

"War Machine" would later resurface for Bellator MMA, compiling a 2-1 record for the Viacom-owned promotion, but once again found himself on the unemployment line after news broke of his latest run-in with the law. Despite the overwhelming evidence against him, Koppenhaver is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

You can hear his side of the story here and here.

Mack, meanwhile, continues on the road to recovery after her violent confrontation (see the graphic photos here). She was recently spotted on the streets of Las Vegas (pic), but insists her mobility is not an indication of her overall health, which includes smashed teeth and a broken nose. And that doesn't take into account the second victim, VH1 reality-show star Cory Thomas.

Koppenhaver is due back in court for a preliminary hearing on Oct. 17.
