The official Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) rankings have been updated following the UFC 178 pay-per-view (PPV) event event from last Saturday (Sept. 27, 2014), which took place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Conor McGregor continued his rise in the featherweight rankings, stealing Dustin Poirier's No. 5 spot after he knocked out "The Diamond" (video) in the very first round in "Sin City."
Dominick Cruz also made a huge jump, as his 61-second knockout victory over Takeya Mizugaki (watch it) earned him the No. 2 spot on the bantamweight list. Which isn't surprising, seeing as how UFC President Dana White confirmed after the bout that "Dominator" would get next crack at division champ, T.J. Dillashaw.
In the main event of the evening, UFC flyweight champion, Demetrius Johnson, submitted Chris Cariaso in round two of their title fight, which was good enough to not only get him his fifth straight title defense, but the No. 3 spot on the pound-for-pound list, knocking off heavyweight champion, Cain Velasquez.
Here's what the rest of the field looks like after a bevy of changes courtesy of UFC.com. Note: (+/- = movement in rankings, *NR = Not previously ranked).

There you have it, another crazy shake up.
It's a rather interesting shake up at that, as Eddie Alvarez jumped up four spots despite losing to Donald Cerrone in the main event of the evening (highlights). Meanwhile, Jorge Masvidal, a man who actually won his lightweight fight on the same card and is the owner of three straight UFC wins, drops down a spot.
Also, Ross Pearson was dropped from the list altogether to make room for Nate Diaz; a man who has still yet to fight in over a year.
Head-scratcher, indeed.
Nevertheless, you can expect these positions to change soon, as UFC Fight Night 53: "Nelson vs. Story" is set to pop off this Sat. (Oct. 4, 2014) in Stockholm, Sweden, just a few hours before UFC Fight Night 54: "MacDonald vs. Saffiedine" in Nova Scotia, Canada.
Until then, give us your thoughts on the latest UFC rankings in the comments section below.
