Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) returns to pay-per-view (PPV) this weekend (Sat., Sept. 27, 2014) with UFC 178 inside MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, featuring a re-worked main event between Flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson defending his 125-pound title against surprise contender, Chris Cariaso.

In the "Johnson vs. Cariaso" co-main event, Lightweight veteran Donald Cerrone will welcome long-time Bellator standout -- and its former 155-pound champion -- Eddie Alvarez to the Octagon for the first time ever. And, of course, "The Peoples Main Event" will showcase Conor McGregor, who will face his toughest mixed martial arts (MMA) challenge to date when he collides with Dustin Poirier in an intriguing Featherweight clash.

UFC Flyweight Champion Demetrious Johnson vs. Chris Cariaso

Round one: Crack of my knuckles and I'm ready to type up a Johnson fight. Inside leg kick from the champ. Another. Nice double jab from Cariaso. 1-2, but it doesn't land. DJ with a beautiful takedown. Butterfly guard. Cariaso trying to wall walk, but Johnson turns him away from the cage. Almost half guard. Full. Butterfly. Pass to half. Side. Half. Full. Half. Outside the positional exchanges, not much happening. Cariaso works his way up but swallows a knee to the gut for his efforts. They're still in the clinch. Body knees from DJ. Cariaso stuffed on a takedown attempt. Cariaso stands and breaks away. Clinch again, another break after some knees. Cariaso gets in a right when DJ comes forward. Nice leg kick, too. Huge overhand from the champ at the bell as Chris tried to knee. Cariaso stumbles and eats a big knee before the round ends.

10-9 Johnson

Round two: Cariaso with some kicks, but without any setup, they're not landing. Johnson with a 3-2. Cariaso comes forward with a combo, but slips and is on his butt. The champ is on top and trying to pass. DJ gets to a weird half and crucifix's Cariaso. DJ teeing off with free punches. Cariaso scrambles and gets out of that, but he's still in trouble. Punches and elbows from the champion. Johnson scrambles to the other side and is working on a kimura. Cariaso almost taps, does the Brazilian/Team Quest tap... Johnson steps over the face and cranks it, getting the tap.

Final result: Demetrious Johnson defeats Chris Cariaso by submission (kimura) at 2:29 of Round Two

155 lbs.: Donald Cerrone vs. Eddie Alvarez

Round one: A counter right from Cerrone is the first meaningful strike to land. Body kick from Cowboy. Leg kicks from both men. Knee from Cerrone, but Alvarez gets in a pair of body blows. Eddie with right hands over and over. Eddie is doing infinite right hand spam here from the clinch. Uppercuts and overhands ad nauseum from Eddie. Overhand and a left from Alvarez. Jab from Cerrone. Nice body kick again from Donald. Heavy leg kick, too. Right to the body from Eddie. Eddie working for a takedown, but Cerrone defends well. Clinch knee from Cerrone. Body kick from Cerrone is met with a straight left hand from Eddie. Cerrone with a takedown and he tries to knee him on the way up.

10-9 Alvarez

Round two: Body jab from Alvarez. Another. Thudding liver kick from the taller Cowboy. Overhand right from Alvarez meets a Cerrone knee. Cerrone lands a nice leg kick. Cerrone lands a solid step in knee as Eddie tried to close the distance. Clinch body knee from Donald. Another heavy left kick. Cowboy with a left and a leg kick that wobbles Eddie. Another leg kick and Cowboy is coming on strong now. They clinch and scramble. Cowboy with the back control for a bit before breaking off. Left hook from Eddie lands. Alvarez gets out of the way of a high kick, but not by much. Leg kick from Cerrone yet again. Lefts from both men. Alvarez checks that kick. Head kick from Eddie. Jab from Cerrone. Cerrone misses a knee and Eddie gets in a nice right. Spinning backfist lands for Eddie at the buzzer.

10-9 Cerrone

Round three: Eddie with a takedown to open up. Cerrone stuffs it and punishes Eddie with a right knee. Big right from Alvarez as Cerrone went for a step-in knee that sent Cowboy ass over ankles. He got up quickly, but Alvarez gets in some nice boxing - catching in about five punches. Leg kick from Cerrone and a nice couple of punches. Alvarez in a bit of trouble up against the cage, but he's firing back and Cerrone won't get caught in a firefight. There's a headkick that finally lands for Cerrone. Cowboy walking him down with long punches and leg kicks. Alvarez's leg is well and truly fuckered. Oh, hell he's almost down with those leg kicks. He finally does drop after a couple. Cerrone on top, looking to finish. This is kinda silly from Cerrone - he's owning the standup. Whatever, Cowboy wins the decision, I suppose. Cerrone ends the fight on top for the past 80 seconds, punching, elbowing and kneeing away.

Final result: Donald Cerrone defeats Eddie Alvarez via decision (unanimous) 29-28 x3

145 lbs.: Conor McGregor vs. Dustin Poirier

Round one: Well, someone's gonna feel real silly when this one's over. McGregor misses a hook kick to open. Leg kick from Poirier. U-S-A chant. Irish fans ole, ole, ole, ole in response. Left from Poirier. One from Conor. Nice left from Conor here. Conor following him and taunting him Diaz style. He clips him with a left behind the temple as Poirier ducks and down goes the Diamond! Hammerfist to the back of the head and then a huge straight punch right to the jaw. One more for good measure and Herb Dean stops it!

Final result: Conor McGregor defeats Dustin Poirier via TKO (punches) at 1:46 of Round One

185 lbs.: Tim Kennedy vs. Yoel Romero

Round one: Feeling out process early. Romero gets a kick caught, but Kennedy can't capitalize on the missed uppercut. Fast left from Romero clips Kennedy. Left, right from Romero and he dodges the counter from Tim. Kennedy's got blood coming from his nose from that shot. Romero with the level change, but he doesn't attempt the takedown. Body kick from Tim. Leg punch from Romero glances the cup. Kennedy catches a kick and gets the takedown, but Romero is up instantly and on Kennedy who also scrambles up in an instant. Kennedy gets a takedown stuffed, but gets out of danger during the interchange. Romero with the takedown, but Kennedy hip escapes and he's up. Romero ducks a right. Kennedy pressing forward, but not landing. Gets in one last body kick before the bell.

10-9 Romero

Round two: Kennedy is swinging wildly and missing by a good margin. Gets a front kick to the body in. Straight left from Yoel lands. The body kicks are the most effective thing Kennedy has had so far as he gets in another. Nice sprawl and a left from the Cuban. Kennedy's missed a bunch of huge overhand rights. Clips on this one, however. Dirty boxing from Kennedy, but his takedown is easily stonewalled. Kennedy with some lighter punches. Good uppercuts from Kennedy. Takedown scramble chain that Romero wins, but Kennedy lands into a guillotine. He gets out and hits a couple shots before Kennedy hip escapes out of it. Nice spinning backfist from Kennedy as Romero is slowing down. Romero backs Kennedy to the cage. Uppercut by Tim. An elbow, too. Another good uppercut. Romero is well and gassed, but he gets in some uppercuts and a nice right hand. Kennedy fights back with some volume. Kennedy with a right and a big left. Another big right! Kennedy surging forward with huge punches near the end of the round and Romero survives!

Round three: Wow, Romero's corner sandbagged heavily to buy Romero some time. HUGE right punch from Romero floors Kennedy. Kennedy is down again after scrambling up! He's up, and Romero sprints back on top of Kennedy! He's down again. Kennedy rolls and BIG JOHN STOPS IT! Kennedy is a bloody mess. What a hell of an ending.

Final result: Yoel Romero defeats Tim Kennedy by TKO (punches and GNP) at 1:08 of Round Three

135 lbs.: Cat Zingano vs. Amanda Nunes

Round one: Early takedown by Nunes after Zingano clinches. Half guard from Cat and a scramble into an armbar. Nunes gets caught in an armbar, but wiggles loose of it after a couple moments of concern. Nice upkick from Zingano. Nunes finally dives back in after a period of standing with a huge punch. Zingano eats another big shot but fishes for that arm again. Huge shots here from Nunes. Another armbar attempt. No dice. DOMINANT punches from Nunes. Absolute blasting down from Nunes. Zingano with another armbar attempt that doesn't work. Nunes surprisingly goes for a leglock of some kind and gives up top position. Cat on top. She gets in some nice punches now. Cat stands and backs off. Cat gets a clinch and threatens knees off a front headlock. Nunes is blocking it, so Cat uses the position to DDT her and roll on top. Punches to end the round from Cat.

10-9 Nunes

Round two: Hell of a round for that one. Cat leads with a left and a knee in the clinch. Good elbow, too. Zingano with the takedown into side control. Nunes threatening to sweep off the cage and it's keeping Zingano from doing much with it. Zingano threatens an armbar, but uses it to gain better position in terms of the cage. Elbow. Now half guard. Good GNP from Cat. Ankle lock from Cat that she loses, but Cat scrambles and stays on top in half. Left hands from Zingano. Cat with a nice elbow. Make that two. Body, body, shoulder shrug. Nunes looks half gassed here. Left elbow, right fist. Footlock from Zingano, but Nunes spins out. Scramble and Nunes gains full guard at least.

10-9 Zingano

Round three: Zingano muscling Nunes badly in the clinch, and she gets the same sacrifice/DDT takedown again. They're in center cage with Cat in half guard. Full mount. Body, body, head, head, head. Nunes is bleeding badly. Cat is elbowing the snot out of Nunes here. Wow. Cat Zingano just beat the brakes off of Nunes for pretty much every minute past the fourth minute of round one.

Final result: Cat Zingano defeats Amanda Nunes by TKO (ground & pound) at 0:58 of round 3

UFC 178 FOX SPORTS 1 "PRELIMS" PLAY-BY-PLAY:

135 lbs.: Dominick Cruz vs. Takeya Mizugaki

Round one: Cruz is finally back, folks! The first big action is a huge takedown from Cruz. Cruz uses it to lambast Mizugaki with punch after punch. Mizugaki stands briefly and gets dynamited with a right hand. Mizugaki goes down and Cruz follows up with a dozen unanswered clean punches.

Final result: Dominic Cruz defeats Takeya Mizugaki by TKO (punches) at 1:01 of round 1

155 lbs.: Jorge Masvidal vs. James Krause

Round one: Upright stances for both guys to open up. Masvidal lands the first significant blow with a nice right about 45 seconds in. Leg kick from Krause. A jab gets in, too. Masvidal with a nice body kick. Krause with a punch, but Masvidal flurries back. They clinch and Krause works out of a guillotine to press Masvidal back. They break and Jorge gets in a clean right. Nice jab from Masvidal. Nice combo from Masvidal and a right hits clean. Another and this time the body kick is the damaging shot. Left from both men.

10-9 Masvidal

Round two: Krause heeds his corner's advice and combos forward to start. Masvidal pressures back. Nice right from Jorge. Krause isn't really finding his range on the head kicks. Krause working for a takedown, Masvidal dropped down for a guillotine that he wasn't able to clinch. He bails, and is on bottom. Masvidal grabs the guillotine again and uses it to roll Krause to his back. Masvidal on top and Krause is getting back to the cage to stand again. He eats a knee for his trouble. Krause with a nice right. Whiffs a cartwheel kick. Masvidal gets in a right, then a left. Jorge with a big flurry that gets in about four or five clean strikes. Masvidal with a hook kick and a takedown. Krause uses the guillotine sweep and he's on the back. Masvidal spins and scrambles. Krause looking for a Peruvian necktie. They break and Masvidal continues to scramble up and lands a big right that knocks Krause on his butt. Masvidal follows down but can't do anything as the round ends.

10-9 Masvidal

Round three: They both land jabs. Jorge with the body kick into a takedown attempt. He slams James down, but Krause is up immediately, despite having Masvidal clamped onto his waist. Single leg is successful for Jorge this time and he's on top in half guard. Krause eats some punches, but escapes and gets to his feet. More pressure from Masvidal. Masvidal is landing much cleaner on every exchange. Krause with two nice straight rights. Masvidal fires back with a knee. Another good right, but Krause gets tripped down into full mount.

10-9 Masvidal

Final result: Jorge Masvidal defeats James Krause via decision (unanimous) 30-27, 30-27, 29-28

170 lbs.: Patrick Cote vs. Stephen Thompson

Round one: Thompson leads with a jab and a side kick. Cote with a clinch into the fence and double underhooks. Thompson swims and reverses him. They break. Nice leg kick from Cote. Thompson leaps in but swings wide of Cote, who gets in a couple of rights. Cracking jab from "Wonderboy". 1-2 as well. Body kick from Thompson as he slides out of the way of an overhand. Cote catches the leg and is trying for the takedown. Thompson sprawls well and ends every attempt from Cote. Two nice left knees from Thompson. Cote tries and arm drag, but doesn't get it and there's a scramble. Thompson on top briefly, gets in some punches and backs off. Cote with a solid low kick. Cote tries for a last second takedown and can't get it.

10-9 Thompson in a close round.

Round two: Cote swinging first, but not landing. Thompson with a flurry and lands both a left and a right. Thompson with two nice counters. Couple of leg kicks from both men. Thompson gets in a right and powers forward, causing Cote to trip. Thompson curiously backs off - perhaps he doesn't want to brawl with the power-puncher. Left from Cote off the bob and weave. They trade lefts. Thompson with a nice overhand. Good right from Stephen. Cote with a single leg, but Thompson feeds it to him and gets back to the cage. Couple of Travis Browne elbows from Thompson. Thompson reverses and lands a left on the break. Cote tries for an ankle pick that missed the area code. Big left from Thompson. Cote clips in a left.

10-9 Thompson

Round three: Thompson with a couple of nice counters to an inside leg kick. Good 1-2 from Thompson. Cote with another ankle pick attempt that fails. Leg kick from Thompson and a head kick that Cote munches like a candy bar. Cote throwing heavy now as he probably thinks he's losing. They trade rights. Cote ducks down nicely, but can't finish off the impressive takedown defense from Thompson. Cote up the middle and a right-leg kick to the body. Thompson with another nice counter-right. Boos from the crowd. Right hand lands for Cote. HUGE left from Thompson drops Cote, but Cote's iron chin is still there, as he survives the flurry. He's still hurt, and Thompson wobbles him with another right. Cote tries for a takedown and gets stuffed. Thompson on top with ground and pound. He backs off again. Cote swinging for the fences to no avail.

Final result: Stephen "Wonderboy" Thompson def. Patrick Cote via decision (unanimous) 30-27, 29-28, 29-28

170 lbs.: Brian Ebersole vs. John Howard

Round one: Ebersole looking awkward, faking takedowns, punching the thigh, threatening his favorite cartwheel kick. They clinch, Howard with a nice elbow. Brian backs Howard into the links and the pace slows. They trade leg knees while Ebersole works for double unders. The referee breaks em. Nice leg kick from Ebersole. Howard with a kick but Ebersole surges forward for a takedown and gets it. Ebersole scrambles to the back and gets in some short GNP. Howard tries to surge up, but his left leg is trapped down by Ebersole. One hook in now for Ebersole with 75 seconds left. Howard moves to his knees and Ebersole follows. Howard is surviving, but is unable to get out of this back control. As I say that. Howard shucks him over his left shoulder and Ebersole lands an illegal upkick. The ref breaks them up to warn Brian, but that also means that John lost the top position. Shrug

10-9 Ebersole

Round two: Ebersole with a leg kick and Howard gets in a much stronger one. Howard stalking "Hairrow". They clinch in center cage, and Howard takes advantage of his underhooks to trip down Ebersole. Half guard, but Howard has the opposite leg trapped in the guard. "Doomsday" is getting in some nice GNP here. Scramble off a kimura grip and Howard takes Ebersole's back. Two loose hooks from Howard. Ebersole does exactly what Joe Rogan is commenting on and spins on top. Brian with a couple of nice punches, but John kicks off the hip and now works forward for a takedown. Howard does nothing with it as Ebersole peppers him with shots to end the round.

10-9 Howard

Round three: Howard with a nice leg kick again. And a hook. Ebersole with a body kick. Inside leg kick from John. One from Ebersole, but Howard eats it to land a couple of solid punches. They clinch and Howard's head is a bit low. They both dirty box and break. Ebersole pot shotting. Ebersole with a left and they clinch. Ebersole with a right. Brian tried for a takedown, but got his head caught off to the side. Howard threatens a guillotine and while he's latched onto the neck, he knees and then breaks it off with a nice elbow. Ebersole with some nice straights and movement. Howard catches a knee and backs up Ebersole. They trade rights and Ebersole goes for a takedown. Big inside leg kick from Howard stumbles Brian. Thai plumm from Ebersole and he gets in a few knees while Howard tries to punch his way out of it. The round ends and they do simultaneous bows to each other in respect.

Final result: Brian Ebersole defeats John Howard via decision (split) 29-28, 29-28, 28-29

UFC 178 FIGHT PASS "PRELIMS" PLAY-BY-PLAY:

155 lbs.: Kevin Lee vs. Jon Tuck

Round one: Lee lands a glancing left hook as they clinch. Tuck lands a pair of good knees to the body an moves him tot he fence before they separate. Head kick connects for Lee, as does a body kick. Back to the clinch and this time it's Lee landing knees downstairs. They split. Tuck with a nice right hand. One minute in. Lee body kick. Tuck snaps off a jab and lands a low kick. High kick blocked. Spinning back kick from Tuck, but it gives Lee the opportunity to suplex him and look for the back. Tuck avoids getting his back taken and rises in the front headlock. Two minutes in. Tuck using the three-point rule to avoid knees, now rises with Lee pressing him against the fence. Lee completes an inside trip into guard. Tuck looking to make space and swings for an armbar. Two minutes to go.

Lee gets his arm out and tries to drop elbows. Tuck gets to his feet, eats a knee to the gut and gets moved back to the fence. Lee with a right hand and another knee downstairs. Tuck answers. Lee fires off another knee and this one strays low. It was a nasty one and Tuck takes plenty of time. Back to the action. Lee comes up short with a high kick, then blocks one from Tuck. One minute to go. Lee tries a teep, throws a high kick and eats a jab for his trouble. Counter left hook connects. Lee moves into the clinch with some dirty boxing, moving Tuck to the cage. Tuck trying to drop elbows, eats some punches from Lee. Tuck stays on his feet until the bell. 10-9 Lee.

Round two: Tuck returns the favor with an inside kick to the junk. Lee shakes it off. Good knee form Tuck after Lee looks to clinch. Tuck high kick lands. Good jab. 1-2 by Lee lands clean. Tuck responds with his own right. Knees in the clinch. Lead uppercut by Lee and a long overhand right. One minute in. Tuck again goes low with an inside kick. The referee takes a point from Tuck, which seems excessive. Body kicks from Lee on the return. Tuck with some nice knees as Lee bullies his way in. Lee looking for a single-leg, abandons it and digs to the body. Tuck presses him against the fence. Knees by Tuck, Lee reverses and changes levels. Two minutes in. No success and they separate. Jab exchange. 1-2 by Lee. He shoots in once again and this time completes a slam into side control. Tuck quickly works back to half guard, now full. Two minutes to go.

Right hand and elbow by Lee. Tuck controlling his posture well. Tuck throws up a triangle, Lee gets his head free and drops a right hand. Omoplata attempt likewise snuffed out and met with a right hand. One minute to go. Referee stands them up after thirty seconds of hand fighting. Lee wades in with punches, Tuck meets him. Teep from Tuck shuts down a late flying knee attempt. 10-8 Lee with the point deduction.

Round three: Tuck flicking out his lead leg. Lee comes up short with punches. Tuck attempts a pair of high kicks. Lee with a right to the body. Tuck with an inside low kick, then one outside. Cut kick attempt. One minute in. Lee high kick blocked, 1-2 misses. Jab and uppercut knock out Tuck's mouthpiece and Lee jumps on him with Tuck tries to pick it up. Lee busts open Tuck's nose with strikes and completes a takedown into guard. Lee dropping some good right hands. Two minutes in. Tuck looks to turn for a leg lock, eats another right for his trouble. Half guard now. Elbows by Lee. Two minutes to go.

Lee landing well with both hands, nearly gives up his back but remains on top in guard. Lee stands over him; Tuck tries to grab onto a leg but Lee limp-legs out and gets back in guard. Triangle attempt goes nowhere. One minute to go. More good ground-and-pound from Lee. Tuck tries some hammerfists from his back and lands some good upkicks before the bell. 10-9 Lee.

Final result: Lee def. Tuck by unanimous decision

135 lbs.: Manny Gamburyan vs. Cody Gibson

Round one: Gibson sticking out his jab early. Gamburyan tries a left hook around the guard, no connection. Gamburyan wings a few haymakers and shoots in. Gibson clips him with a left hook after denying the takedown. Body-head from Gibson. One minute in. Body kick from Manny, right hook from Hibson. 1-3 from Gibson blocked. Front kick comes up short. Gibson slings Manny to the ground and grabs the front headlock as Manny rises. Manny escapes the grip, then accidentally drives a knee into Gibson's groin. Two minutes in. They resume. Gibson denies a level change. Gamburyan low kick. 1-2 from Gibson blocked. Manny's own swings are deflected and he ducks a wheel kick attempt. Gibson active with the jab. Both land low kicks. Two minutes to go.

Gibson with a cross as they separate. Gibson's jab is working very well and has made a mouse under Manny's left eye. Gibson high kick blocked, right cross connects. Another cross rattles Gamburyan. Gibson opening up against the fence. Manny counters with a double-leg and completes it. One minute to go. Gibson looking to stand, Manny in on his hips. Gibson tries to gain guard, then reverses and gets in on Manny's leg. Manny avoids the takedown but eats some level elbows against the cage. Gibson lands a few body shots before the bell. 10-9 Gibson.

Gibson slips, Manny can't capitalize and gets pressed against the fence. Manny reverses position with double underhooks and completes a single-leg. Manny on top in half-butterfly. One minute to go. Gibson looking to turn into him. Gibson leaves his neck out as rises and Manny drops down for a guillotine. Manny squeezing with all his might and gets the tap in the waning seconds.
