Randy Couture: UFC would be 'silly' to book Gina Carano vs Ronda Rousey title fight right away

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) President Dana White reveled that if he was successful in locking down the services of Gina Carano, she would get an immediate title shot against current women's 135-pound champion, Ronda Rousey.

This, even though Carano hasn't competed in mixed martial arts (MMA) in five years.

According to Randy Couture, while he has no issues with a fight between the two talented women, it would only be competitive and entertaining if "Conviction" is given the proper time to get back into solid shape. In fact, he thinks that if her first fight back is against "Rowdy," it would be a "silly" decision.

His words on"The MMA Hour:"

"I have not gotten a chance to talk to Gina and she hasn't really reached out to new me regarding that situation. I think she's as capable as any athlete that I've been around. Technically, it's a very interesting matchup; she's a very, very good striker. We've not really seen Ronda Rousey face a solid striker like Gina Carano. I think if Gina had an achilles heel, even when she was at her peak over five years ago, it was the grappling side of things. So, my sincere hope is that they give her a chance to get up to speed, get back into top fight shape and really kind of up her grappling technique and that side of her game. Then it would be an amazing fight. I think it's silly, it'd be silly for Gina. I think Gina has way more to lose there than she has to gain in stepping right in to a title fight after being off and off the mats in training environment for five years. And frankly she's done a great job in her movie career, I don't know why she would want to do that. I think if they give her a chance to get her feet back under her and get back up to technical speed where she was, it woudl be a very interesting fight."

Couture, a former UFC Light Heavyweight and Heavyweight champion, helped Carano hone her skills during her reign as the Strikeforce champion and the face of women's MMA, which is the primary reason he only wants to see one of his former students get a fair shake.

Because fighting someone like Rousey -- who has been very active and firing on all cylinders (example) with no time to get back into her old form -- doesn't make a whole lot of sense and will only benefit UFC.

He explains:

"I think from a business standpoint, absolutely, ZUFFA and UFC are going to put a ton of money in their pockets for that fight whether they let Gina prepare properly or not, that's not really a question. I think that's huge fight. For a long time Gina Carano was the queen of MMA. She is exactly what Ronda Rousey is to MMA right now. To have those two meet up, is a huge fight on the business side of things. Obviously, my loyalty and my concern is for Gina Carano and that she gets a fair shake and gets to get up to speed, get a couple of fights under her belt and get back on track, get back into the former tactical prowess were used to seeing her at. To throw her right in against Ronda Rousey in the very first fight; Ronda is firing on ally cylinders right now, she's been very active and she's as sharp as she can be right now. That just doesn't make a lot of sense to me."

Nevertheless, talks between UFC and Carano have cooled down a bit, which means a potential title fight between Carano and Ronda is on the backburner for now, giving the rest of UFCs women's division hope to secure a title shot next.

I can think of at least one person who might be jumping for joy.
