Ben Henderson explains 'flash knockout' at hands of Rafael dos Anjos at UFC Fight Night 49

Well, that explains it.

Mark D. Smith-USA TODAY Sports

"It was a flash knockout. You know, they happen. You know, the flash knockout, I remember dropping my back in the fence and I was like 'oh, damn it, that didn't look good at all, that's a bad thing right there.' Wanted to latch on to a single leg, push him up against -- turn, you know -- push him up against the cage, hopefully take a couple shots back of the head, let the cobwebs clear a little bit, you know, take some time and then start working from there. But as soon as I start to come around and go on to the single leg, 'Big John' (McCarthy) did his job."

Ben Henderson offers his explanation on the controversial finish to his lightweight loss to Rafael dos Anjos in the main event of last night's (Sat., Aug. 23, 2014) UFC Fight Night 49 showcase from the BOK Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma on Fox Sports 1.

The reality is there's very little time to make clear decision as the referee and John McCarthy, a veteran of the fight game, immediately jumped in when he saw Henderson lose consciousness. Even if that lasted all of one second, that's all the time it took to make the call.

It cost Henderson a victory, his standing in the division, and all the cash he would have received via win bonus.

Safety first.
