Demetrious Johnson vs Chris Cariaso to serve as UFC 177 co-main event

Championship double-dip!

Jason Da Silva-USA TODAY Sports

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) has been adding matches to its upcoming UFC 177 event, which takes place at Sleep Train Arena in Sacramento, Calif., on Aug. 30, 2014, with a quickness.

And earlier this evening the co-main event was revealed via Yahoo!Sports.com, featuring Flyweight champion, Demetrious Johnson, defending his 125-pound title against No. 8-ranked Chris Cariaso with top contender, John Dodson, recently ruled out indefinitely with a major knee injury.

Johnson recently fought at UFC 174, defeating Ali Bagautinov (who later failed his drug test) in a dominant unanimous decision victory. In his tenure as UFC champion, "Mighty Mouse" has amassed four title defenses, with two decisions, one submission and one knockout.

Cariaso comes into this bout on a three-fight win streak. "Kamikaze" was originally slated to face Kyoji Horiguchi at the upcoming UFC Fight Night 52 in Japan. That bout is obviously now scrapped, with Cariaso instead charged with trying his luck against one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the sport.

UFC 177 will be headlined by the bantamweight championship rematch pitting reigning division kingpin, TJ Dillashaw, against Brazilian nemesis and ex-titleholder Renan Barao. Elsewhere on the card, Derek Brunson and Lorenz Larkin hook 'em up in a battle of Strikeforce veterans, while Danny Castillo and Anthony Ferguson butt heads in lightweight action.
