Jason High has always been a talented martial artist, he just hasn't had as much opportunity to shine as so many others. That changed tonight (Sat., June 7, 2014) in his lightweight debut against division stalwart Rafael dos Anjos on the main card of the UFC Fight Night 42 event in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on Fox Sports 1.
The two had a wildly entertaining first round punctuated by High showing his best stuff early but dos Anjos responding with fire. A High takedown led to the two trading submission attempts but it was the Brazilian who appeared to have the edge when they went back to their feet.
He landed hard and clean once there and scored a late takedown to put a stamp on his turnaround in the opening round. A funny moment happened when dos Anjos attempted a kimura and High blocked it by grabbing his own shorts. Rafael complained to the referee about this and was promptly told, "he's allowed to grab his own shorts".
Yeah.
High appeared to recover in the second, blasting away with body kicks, but dos Anjos worked his grappling game and once again took control. A failed guillotine gave way to High earning superior position but it was clear the heavier fighter was losing his wind.
Then, it happened.
Dos Anjos popped High with a hard shot that put him down and the follow up onslaught was enough to force the referee to step in to stop it. High protested the stoppage immediately after it came.
Upon further review, he may have had a case. Then again, safety first.
Let us know what you think of the stoppage, Maniacs.
