Retired UFC fighter Chael Sonnen fails second drug test, tests positive for HGH and EPO

The exam was administered back on June 5 as part of his pre-fight drug test for UFC 175.

Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) middleweight number one contender, Chael Sonnen, retired from mixed martial arts (MMA) earlier this month after failing his UFC 175 pre-fight drug test, testing positive for Anastrozole and Clomiphene.

Get all the details on that career-ending misstep here.

"The American Gangster" insisted the banned substances were to assist with his health and ability to bear children, after a new ruling by Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) forced him to abandon his testosterone replacement therapy (TRT).

Unfortunately for the FOX Sports analyst, there's more to the story, as Sonnen was also subjected to a random pre-fight blood test back on June 5, 2014, while still on the ZUFFA payroll.

MMA Fighting has the results:

Sonnen was asked to take a blood and urine test on June 5 in Portland, Ore., by the NSAC because at the time he was scheduled to fight at UFC 175 on July 5 in Las Vegas. The commission learned earlier this week that Sonnen failed those tests due to the presence of human growth hormone (HGH), recombinant human erythropoietin (EPO), which is typically used to boost red blood cells that carry oxygen to the muscles, increasing stamina and endurance, anastrozole, used to treat early stages of breast cancer, and human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), the female fertility drug that is often used in an effort to restart testosterone production.

Between the two tests, it appears there was a lot going on inside that body.

Sonnen was suspended indefinitely by NSAC during a preliminary hearing back on June 17 (more on that here), and is expected to appear before the commission at a later date to receive his punishment. No doubt he'll be judged more harshly in the wake of these latest findings.

How this affects his participation at Metamoris 4, if at all, remains to be seen.
