Fresh off the first-ever finish of his near-perfect Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) career (9-1), former Lightweight champion, Ben Henderson, will continue his road back to the top spot against fellow top-ranked contender, Rafael dos Anjos, in UFC Fight Night 49's main event.
TulsaWorld.com brought word of the important five-round 155-pound showdown, which will take place at BOK Center in Tulsa, Okla., on Aug. 23, 2014, earlier this evening.
Henderson most recently stopped Rustam Khabilov via submission (rear-naked choke) at UFC Fight Night 42, a milestone for the oft-criticized "Smooth," whose previous eight wins inside the Octagon came via decisions. He declared shortly after the finish that he is the man to beat to earn a title shot thanks to his ranking just behind reigning division champion, Anthony Pettis.
Pettis, however, holds two career wins over Henderson, including the first round submission that earned him the Lightweight belt at UFC 164 back in Aug. 2013. That makes a trilogy match less than desirable, which is the primary reason UFC booked Pettis against Gilbert Melendez and Henderson needs to keep killing contenders.
Dos Anjos, too, was most recently in action at UFC Fight Night 42, taking out Jason High midway through the second round via technical knockout. It was overshadowed, however, by High's actions afterward, which included pushing the referee and ultimately getting fired.
"RDA" has won six of his last seven appearances inside the Octagon, his only setback a decision loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov two months ago.
Should be a good one.
Thiago Alves vs. Jordan Mein and Timothy Elliott vs. Wilson Reis are the only other UFC Fight Night 49 bouts rumored at this time. But, expect that to change with tickets for the event set to go on sale next month (July 11, 2014).
