Heading into his main event showcase at UFC Fight Night 41 yesterday (Sat., May 31, 2014) in Berlin, Germany, Gegard Mousasi believed a victory over Mark Munoz would catapult him far enough up the ladder at 185-pounds that he could be somewhere close to a title shot.
Ambitious.
Well, "The Dreamcatcher" choked out "The Filipino Wrecking Machine" inside the very first round (watch it happen right here) in a dominant performance that, at the very least, established his name in the middleweight division. This was, after all, just his second victory inside the Octagon, the first coming against Ilir Latifi.
That's without mentioning a loss to Lyoto Machida.
Despite his pre-fight comments, Mousasi came back down to Earth at the post-fight press conference when asked about what the immediate future may hold:
"I'm not interested in them at all, but I think (because) I get a win, I'm going to get a winner (as my next opponent). (Tim) Kennedy or (Luke) Rockhold, anyone who is coming off of a win who is maybe a contender. So that is why I think I will get one of those guys, but I don't know. I'm not challenging anyone."
Kennedy is riding a four-fight win streak while Rockhold has won two in a row. The latter is dealing with an injured foot, however. Either way, Mousasi at least has a level head regarding his actual standing within the division as opposed to his perceived one.
You Maniacs out there like the idea of either of these bouts?
