Dana White: Wanderlei Silva is 'done' after drug test fiasco sank Chael Sonnen fight (Updated)

New, comments

One of the greatest careers in mixed martial arts (MMA), carved out by one of the most fan-friendly fighters of all time, is now in jeopardy.

***UPDATE: Wandy is apparently still employed:

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) President Dana White today (May 30, 2014) said Wanderlei Silva was "done" after his drug test fiasco forced an impromptu change to the UFC 175 pay-per-view (PPV) event, scheduled for Fourth of July Weekend in Las Vegas, Nevada.

MMA Junkie's Steven Marrocco was the bearer of bad news earlier today.

Silva (35-12) has not seen action since a knockout win over Brian Stann last year in Japan. It should be noted that Stann retired shortly thereafter, revealing that his safety was at risk while competing in a sport where performance-enhancing drug (PED) testing was "inadequate."

See those comments here.

After annihilating the "All American" overseas, Wandy was sidelined with a bad back for most of 2013. Upon his return, the Brazilian was quickly inserted into a grudge match opposite Chael Sonnen, following their coaching duties in The Ultimate Fighter (TUF): "Brazil 3" earlier this year.

No longer.

"The Axe Murderer" was bounced from the event after he allegedly refused to take a surprise drug test from the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC), who wanted to make sure Silva was playing by the rules before handing over a license to compete at UFC 175.

That didn't sit too well with White, who was forced to call up Vitor Belfort as a replacement.

The irony of that situation is that Belfort was also responsible for the cancellation of a fight, when NSAC banned testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) and drug tested "The Phenom" out-of-competition for his UFC 173 title fight against Chris Weidman.

The results of that "irrelevant" test remain sealed.

There has been no official word from Silva on his fighting future; however, the former PRIDE FC champion has promised to release one of his patented video blogs on Saturday -- perhaps sooner -- explaining everything that went down and where he plans to go from here.

Stay tuned.
