UFC 173 results: Daniel Cormier wants Jon Jones fight, believes he deserves title shot next

When Daniel Cormier obliterated Dan Henderson in the co-main event of the UFC 173: "Barao vs. Dillashaw" pay-per-view (PPV) last night (Sat., May 24, 2014) at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, he was barely back in the dressing room before there were calls for him to get the next light heavyweight title shot.

As it were, he absolutely agrees.

Cormier spoke extensively about the issue at the post-fight press conference (watch it in full here) and his quotes have been transcribed below.

On a potential match-up with Jon Jones:

"For Jones, that's a tough hill to climb, man. There's no just beating Jon Jones. I would have to have my best performance. Knowing that I was fighting for the UFC title I would train as though I need to have my best performance. I just think that styles make fights and I match up well with him. You know, we haven't really seen him on his back for an extended period of time but if I get on top of him I think I can hold him down and get some offense off."

On if he wants his title shot to come against Jones:

"I want to be the champion, that's really why I started fighting. I'm 35-years-old, it's not like I'm a kid, so I can't wait too long. But, you know, it means something to beat Jon Jones. I know Dana, we all praise Alexander Gustafsson for what he's done, he's a great fighter. But it means a little bit more to beat a Jon Jones. It's like TJ tonight beating Renan Barao or look at what Chris Weidman beating Anderson Silva did. If anybody else was the champion I don't think it would have had the impact that it did. So, yeah, I would prefer that Jones still be the champion."

On waiting for a title shot instead of continuing to fight:

"I just think that at a point you look at your resume and I've earned a title shot. I've got five top 10 wins, I'm undefeated, I haven't lost a round, I haven't lost a fight in two weight classes. I won the Strikeforce Grand Prix. I fought Bigfoot (Silva) after a year-and-a-half in the sport, I mean... my resume speaks for itself. And you gotta remember, guys, this is like my fifth fight in the past 15 months, you know? So I fight every three months or so."

On waiting for a title shot if Jones loses to Gustafsson and gets an immediate rematch:

"Yeah, I've gotta just get back to work because, you know, Jon Jones is a great champion, he's defended that title more than anybody ever has. And if he lost he deserves a rematch, just like Anderson Silva did. Those guys have earned the right to fight for the title as many times as they want. So, yeah, I would definitely fight again. I'm not saying I'm opposed to just fighting; I'm just saying that I think after four years, four-and-a-half years in this sport with what I've accomplished, you know, I think I deserve a title shot. But as Dana said, we're going to talk and if they come up with something good I'll fight. I'm not afraid of anybody, I can beat every one of these guys so I'll fight 'em all."

No matter what happens, Cormier's future is bright.
