Robbie Lawler was looking to earn another crack at Johny Hendricks and his 170-pound title at tonight's (Sat., May 24, 2014) UFC 173: "Barao vs. Dillashaw" pay-per-view (PPV) at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. He could have done so by impressively taking out Jake Ellenberger.
So that's exactly what he did.
Ellenberger had very little to offer in the way of offense throughout the three round affair, pulling back on his punches and doing more circling away from Lawler than actively engaging with him.
For his part, Robbie was patient while he found the distance and once he did, he was firing off with meaty hooks and kicks to the head. He faded a bit late but the finishing sequence saw him put his knuckles in "The Juggernaut's" eyeball before following up with a big knee to the dome.
After, "Ruthless" told Joe Rogan he wants another crack at the welterweight title.
Absent other interesting contenders, this victory may very well have earned him that shot.
