Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) has rolled out a neat new video package to promote what it describes as, "one of the best title fights" in its history between Jon Jones vs. Alexander Gustafsson.
And that's no exaggeration.
"Bones" and "The Mauler" hooked 'em up in the main event of UFC 165, which took place at Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Canada, on on Sept. 13, 2013. On paper, it was merely a tune-up fight for Jones, the dominant champion who had ransacked a Murderer's Row of former champions to stake his claim as one of the best mixed martial arts (MMA) fighters ... ever.
Gustafsson, however, wasn't about to roll over, turning in the performance of a lifetime and pushing Jones to his limit. In fact, once the dust settled on the raucous back-and-forth battle, company president Dana White explained it as a fight so taxing that Jones and Gustafsson "probably felt like they were going to die."
And that's no exaggeration.
In anticipation of Jones' return to the Octagon this weekend (Sat., April 26, 2014) against Glover Teixeira at UFC 172, the promotion introduces a "Flashback" series that features "never-before-seen footage from state-of-the-art, specialty cameras, and exclusive new sound captured from all corners."
Indeed, it's more than 20 minutes of exciting highlights, commentary and behind-the-scenes video that truly illustrates just how wild, unpredictable and close the fight was before the unanimous decision in favor of Jones was read.
And the reason a rematch needs to happen sooner rather than later at some point this year ... we hope.
