Justin Gaethje vs. Nick Newell lightweight title fight joins Tyrone Spong at WSOF 11 in July

World Series of Fighting (WSOF) 11 is shaping up to be quite the card, with a lightweight title fight set, along with the return of a kickboxing kingpin.

GLORY

Shortly after World Series of Fighting (WSOF) wrapped up WSOF 9: "Carl vs. Palhares" last night (Sat., March 29, 2014) from Las Vegas, Nevada, the promotion announced its plans for a stacked mixed martial arts (MMA) show in July.

WSOF lightweight champion Justin Gaethje, who is coming off a scorching knockout of Rich Patishnock at WSOF 8, will defend his belt against the rising Nick Newell.

Both athletes are currently undefeated with 11-0 records in the sport.

Newell secures a title shot after his third straight submission victory, in which he tapped Sabah Fadai at WSOF 7 in December. The promotion announced the news last night on Twitter.

WSOF 11 is supposed to be headlined by new welterweight champion Rousimar Palhares taking on Jon Fitch, but Fitch doesn't seem to be on the same page as his boss, agreeing to fight only in June.

It's unclear if the lightweight championship will now headline the card, since it was set for the co-main event, or if the promotion can fix its breakdown in communication with Fitch and proceed as planned.

Time will tell.

Also making his presence felt will be Tyrone Spong, who participates in his third MMA fight, against an opponent to be named. The kickboxing stud has enjoyed a fairly easy transition into the sport, with a pair of previous victories under the WSOF banner.

"King of The Ring" currently holds a kickboxing record of 73-6-1 and 1 "No Contest."

WSOF 11 has yet to lock in an exact date or venue, but we'll be sure to pass along that information just as soon as it's made available. In the meantime, check out our full coverage of WSOF 9: "Carl vs. Palhares" right here.
