There's no place like home.
After making his successful World Series of Fighting (WSOF) debut last night (Sat., March 29, 2014) at WSOF 9: "Carl vs. Palhares" in Las Vegas, Nevada, former UFC middleweight title challenger Yushin Okami will get the main event treatment back home in Japan for WSOF 12.
"Thunder" is slated to headline the promotion's August event in Tokyo, Japan, according to WSOF President Ray Sefo, who announced the news late last night.
The Japanese powerhouse took care of business in familiar fashion last night, dismantling Svetlozar Savov until he was able to secure the arm-triangle submission victory in the second round (watch the full fight here). He came that much closer to achieving his long-term goal in the promotion, which is obtaining the middleweight championship.
The event's exact date is still unknown and it will be the first time the promotion steps foot in the "Land of the Rising Sun," previously holding a set of events in both Nicaragua and Canada.
The Kanagawa-based fighter was cut by Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) last September after losing to Ronaldo Souza at UFC Fight Night 28 in Brazil. Okami had been with the promotion since 2006, racking up a record of 13-5 inside the Octagon.
His arm triangle over Savov was his first submission win since 2006.
It remains to be seen who Okami could challenge in August, and if he will be competing for the middleweight strap. Considering UFC castoff Rousimar Palhares made his debut and won the welterweight strap last night in the main event, expect Okami to challenge for the vacant belt in one of his next two fights.
