In the main event, former Bellator featherweight champion Pat Curran regained his title from Daniel Straus thanks to a Hail Mary rear-naked choke attempt in the waning seconds of the fifth round. Curran appeared to be down on the judges' scorecards heading into the final frame, and he likely needed a finish in order to secure the victory and take home the championship.
At first it appeared Straus would survive the choke, but Curran tenaciously held on, and with just 14 second remaining on the clock, got the tap.
Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and Strikeforce veteran Nah-Shon Burrell had a short evening thanks to a rapid fire technical knockout defeat suffered at the hands and feet of Andrey Koreshkov. The Bellator mainstay made quick work of Burrell, gaining the victory at just 41 seconds into the fight's opening round.
The end for Burrell came by way a body kick/knee to the face combination that dropped the Philadelphia native and opened him up for a series of punches on the ground from Koreshkov.
Elsewhere in the 170-pound tournament, Sam Oropeza made a statement with a first-round knockout victory over Cristiano Souza, set up by a beautiful leaping right hook to the Brazilian's jaw.
In the opening bout of the televised main card, Adam McDonough defeated Jesse Juarez via unanimous decision in the first round of the welterweight tournament. Juarez had McDonough in trouble early in the fight's opening frame, but spent most of the remaining two rounds on the receiving end of ground-and-pound delivered by McDonough.
Bellator returns to Spke TV next Friday night (March 21, 2014) featuring a title match pitting light heavyweight champion Attila vegh versus interim 205-pound champ Emanuel Newton.
