Avoca-doh! Rory MacDonald stabs himself prior to UFC 170, nearly withdraws due to knife injury

Never bring a knife to an avocado fight.

Top Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) welterweight contender Rory MacDonald bagged a "Fight of the Night" bonus for his win over Demian Maia at the UFC 170 pay-per-view (PPV) event, which took place last Saturday night (Feb. 22, 2014) inside Mandalay Bay Event Center in Las Vegas, Nevada (watch it).

But it was a fight that nearly failed to materialize.

That's because "Ares" sliced and diced his hand while cutting up an avocado and was forced to go to the emergency room. Fortunately, his knife mishap did not result in any severed tendons and following a round of stitches, MacDonald was good to go.

From the UFC 170 post-fight press conference (watch it):

"I stabbed myself. It was pretty embarrassing. I couldn't believe it. I thought I was going to have to pull out of the fight because you could easily hit a tendon. I went to the emergency room, got stitched up, got checked out. Everything's fine and intact. It went in really far. But it got stitched up, I fought, and everything's cool."

Everything is cool, indeed, now that he's back in the win column.

MacDonald (16-2) saw his five-fight winning streak upended by Robbie Lawler last November, which cooled some of the Canadian's heat in the 170-pound title chase. His hard-fought win over Maia, however, will likely get him back in the mix against another top name.
