Rory MacDonald tried to run into the Octagon last night (Sat., Feb. 22, 2014) at UFC 170, which took place from Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, eager to punch Demian Mai in the face and lay down a memorable lick.
Unfortunately, MacDonald's enthusiasm almost worked against him, with Maia getting the better part of the early action and working over the young Canadian on the ground for most of the first frame.
Between rounds, "Ares" settled down and came out for the second stanza calmer, and seemingly fresher, keeping a healthy distance thanks to a punishing jab, gut-busting kicks to the body and great takedown defense.
Sprawl and brawl, 101 (read full recap here).
MacDonald would cruise through the final two rounds en route to huge win, one he needed desperately after a listless loss to Robbie Lawler in his previous performance, which left company president, Dana White, unimpressed. In fact, MacDonald and Maia -- who was game, but clearly out-classed on the feet and sucking wind way too early -- were awarded with an extra $50,000 each in bonus money for delivering the UFC 170 "Fight of the Night."
That's a good re-start.
