Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is back in action this Saturday night (Feb. 22, 2014) when the world's pre-eminent mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion returns to the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The UFC 170: "Rousey vs. McMann" pay-per-view (PPV) event features a battle of undefeated Olympians as UFC Women's Bantamweight Champion Ronda Rousey puts her 135-pound title on the line against top wrestling phenom Sara McMann.

Daniel Cormier will square off against one of his former mat amigos in the co-headliner, thanks to an injury to Rashad Evans, as ex-barista Patrick Cummins steps in on super-short notice to try to shock "DC" in the former heavyweight's 205-pound debut.

Ronda Rousey vs. Sara McMann
Round 1: Nice right from McMann early, then one from Ronda. Ronda eats two more rights but presses McMann against the cage. McMann with two knees of her own. Good right hands from both. Ronda pushing her back into the cage with punches and knees. Good right from Ronda. Short elbow; Ronda folds McMann with a vicious knee to the body and that's enough for Herb Dean to call it. Ronda's first win via strikes; very nice.
Final result: Rousey def. McMann by TKO (Knee)

Daniel Cormier vs. Patrick Cummins
Round 1: Cummins lands a leg kick early. Cormier easily denies a takedown. Body kick from Cummins, Cormier denies a takedown and roughs him up in the clinch. Nice short right hand from Cummins in the clinch, but Cormier clocks him with an uppercut starts pouring on the hurt. Cormier relentless, landing repeated heavy punches from one end of the cage to another. Cummins goes down on a glancing uppercut, pops up, gets knocked down again with a left hook, and Cormier pounds him out in short order. That was predictable.

Rory MacDonald vs. Demian Maia
Round 1: Maia shoots inside five seconds, but is denied. Again, but this time he transitions into a single-leg and runs the pipe into Rory's guard. Rory looking to use butterfly guard. One minute in. Maia trying to navigate the hooks and is nearly past. Elbows from Maia. Now Maia frees his foot and is in mount with three minutes to go. Rory holding him close as Maia drops short punches and elbows. Rory tries to buck but cannot; Maia continues dropping shots. Rory manages to work a leg through, back to half guard, but eats an elbow for his trouble. More elbows. Maia almost back to mount with 90 seconds left. Rory back to butterfly. Rory manages to get a bit of distance and gets to his feet; 50 seconds left. Body kick by Rory. Brazilian kick blocked, then Maia stings Rory with right and left hooks. Rory responds and gets Demian off of him. There's the bell; all Maia. 10-9 same.
Round 2: Left hand from Maia answered by a one-two from Rory. Right hook from Demian. Another left from Demian, takedown denied. Rory front kick blocked. Stiff jab by Demian. Leadleft connects. Rory head kick blocked, Maia tries to pull guard, but Rory separates. Maia shoots again, sprawled on. Good 3-2 from Rory. MAia shoots again, not even close. Hard body kick from MacDonald. Rory easily stops another shot. One-two from Rory. Stiff pair of jabs. Hard body kick as Demian tries to change levels again. Maia is stumbling, possibly from fatigue. Maia with a weak spinning back kick after blocking some head kicks. Good left hand, though, with two minutes to go. Big right from Rory. Head kick is blocked, body kick is not. Maia answers with an inside leg kick. Rory pumping his jab, scores with a pair of body kicks and stuffs a takedown. Thirty seconds left. Good right hand from Rory. Round 3: One-two on the money from Rory. Maia connects with an overhand left. Body kick from Rory. Head kick blocked. One-two lands. Maia shoots for a single leg and gets stuffed again. Another body kick from Rory. Desperate shot against the cage from Maia with three minutes left; he has the single, lefts Rory up, and scores a big takedown. Rory again looking to use butterfly hooks to stand, Maia all over him. Rory takes advantage of Maia's overzealousness to stand back up with two minutes to go. Another shot from Maia. Round 1: Waldburger with a leg kick. Pyle lands one of his own. TJ tries a lead-leg hook kick that falls well short. TJ checks a leg kick. Inside leg kicks from both. TJ enters the clinch behind a body shot and presses Pyle against the cage. TJ looking for a single-leg, can't get it, and Pyle exits. Waldburger slips on a high kick but stands before Pyle can capitalize. Nice left form Waldburger. Nice cross counter by Waldburger, followed by a low kick. Teep from Pule, knee to the body and a lovely outside trip. TJ rolls from turtle into half butterfly, but Pyle moves into side. Pyle lands short punches from side. Shoulder strikes. TJ spins out and uses a takedown attempt to stand. He presses Pyle against the fence, narrowly avoids a knee from the plum, and works to bring Mike down. TJ going hard for the takedown, but eats a pair of knees form the plum. He stays on Mike and presses him again to the fence at the ten second mark, only for Mike to take him down at the bell. 10-9 Pyle.
Round 2: Front kick by Pyle misses by inches. Nice lead right form TJ. Pyle low kick. Head kick from Waldburger is blocked. TJ with a leg kick and another following a series of punches. Pyle catches a leg kick and bullies him down, only for TJ to roll for a heel hook. Mike defends well and works from half guard. Mike attempts to mount, cannot, but does get side, TJ holding onto his head with. TJ works back to butterfly guard and uses the cage to stand, avoiding the knee as he does so. Good counter right hand and knee by Pyle.Pyle with a counter right, TJ exits with a left. Pyle wheel kick blocked. TJ high kick meets a similar fate. Into the clinch, dirty boxing from both. TJ in dominant position in the cage, fishing for a single leg with eighty seconds left. Pyle defending, lands a knee to the body. Pyle gets the body lock and takes TJ down. TJ spins out back to his own takedown attempt against the cage. Pyle gets underhooks and moves off the cage before TJ separates. Right hand from TJ. Body kick from TJ is blocked. Round 3: TJ lands a good left and followup low kick. Two-punch combo connects. Pyle catches a kick, can't capitalize. Pyle lands his own right hand. Stiff jab from TJ, then a right to the body. High kick blocked. Ninety seconds in. Lead right from Pyle forces TJ back and another has him shooting. Pyle stops teh takedown and smacks him with a loud shoulder strike in the clinch. Pyle lands a spinning back elbow that drops TJ; TJ back up and pushing forward as Pyle looks to land knees in the plum. TJ pressing Pyle against the cage. Two minutes left and Pyle gets the plum and hurts TJ with two standing elbow. TJ is lazy going for another takedown and eats a knee. Pyle looks for a guillotine and rolls him into mount. Ninety seconds left and TJ gives up his back after taking two huge elbows. Pyle is destroying him from his back; TJ has nothing left. Pyle continues to drop punches and elbows until Herb dean steps in to save him with just under a minute left.

Stephen Thompson vs. Robert Whittaker
Round 1: Stiff jab from Whittaker. Thompson blocks a head kick, pushes Whittaker back with punches. Leg kick from Whittaker. Whittaker avoids a combination, lands a lead right. One-two from Wonderboy. Another nice jab from Whittaker, who takes a body kick and leg kick. Robert doubling up the jab. Lead-leg axe kick form Wonderboy lands. Wonderboy with a a four-piece combo, lands the latter two. Whittaker tags him with a left, Wonderboy scores a combination to the body and head. Thompson body shot. Uppercut connects. Rob lands a right, eats a lead-leg axe kick. Good two-piece from Thompson, who takes another jab from Whittaker. Another body shot from Thompson, another jab from Whittaker. Another. Right from Thompson, left from Whittaker. Good right from Wonderboy. Ninety seconds to go and Thompson melts Whittaker with a right hand. Whittaker stays alive and stands, but Wonderboy stays on him and drops him again. Whittaker clings to a leg for dear life but eats a series of punches that convince Yamasaki to step in. Nice finish.

Alexis Davis vs. Jessica Eye
Round 1: Eye flurries early. Davis moves into the clinch, lands a couple of knees to the body. Eye pressing her against the cage. Davis gets the plum, lands one knee before getting pressed again into the cage. Eye exists with a series of punches. Nice counter left from Eye. Front kick to the dome from Davis, right hand by Jessica as she presses Davis again into the cage. Eye with some short punches and knees. Ref breaks them up, three minutes to go. Alexis with a pair of leg kicks. Body kick, back into the clinch and they trade some dirty boxing. Hard right hand from Jessica after taking a knee to the body. Leg kick, Jessica answers with a pair of hard punches. Davis in the dominant position this clinch, tries a trip but can't get it. Pressing Jessica against the cage, landing knees to the body and legs. Jessica gets out, lands a good right as she does. Both miss with flurries. Leg kick form Eye. Next one checked, as is Alexis' next one. Alexis shoots in with thirty seconds left, gets the double and moves into side control. Jessica gets half guard with ten seconds left. Round ends there; 10-9 Eye.
Round 2: Leg kick by Alexis. Jessica with one of her own. Next one from Alexis is to the body. Both land leg kicks, Jessica sneaks in an elbow. Alexis catches a body kick and trips her down into half guard 75 seconds in. Alexis looking to peel her leg free. Halfway point and they're still in that position. Short shots by Davis. Eye not really working to stand, just trying to keep Davis in check. Alexis postures up as Jessica tries to turn into her, then flattens her back out. One minute to go, no progress. Jessica tries to used the underhook to stand but gives up the seatbelt. Twenty seconds and Alexis starts dropping punches. She ends the round with near-back control. 10-9 Davis.
Round 3: Davis leg kick answered by a pair of hooks. Eye leg kick is checked. Another leg kick from Alexis. Another one at the four minute mark, Eye catches it but can't capitalize. Again. Another one lands. Inside this time, then outside that Jessica counters with a left hand. Good right from Eye, after which she denies a shot from too far out. Alexis with a body kick. Another one at the halfway point. Eye with a kick of her own. Good counter right from Jessica. They trade punches in the clinch, Jessica getting the better of it. Inside low kick from Davis, then a body kick that's caught and dropped. Jabs by both. Eye flicking out low kicks. Simultaneous kicks. Davis doesn't commit to a shot. Good jab by Jessica. Round 1: Low kicks early. Assuncao presses forward with hooks. Good left hook by Assuncao. Munhoz low kick. Next one hits with the foot. Assuncao misses with a counter right, lands on his next attempt. Munhoz with another good leg kick. Body kick this time and he blocks a spinning back kick to the head. Another body kick, answered by Assuncao. Inside low kick from Raphael. Assuncao aggressive with his hooks but thus far hitting arms. More low kicks by both. Assuncao bouncing some heavy rights off of Munhoz's guard. Pedro with a pair of body shots. Right hands from both. Assuncao with a four-punch glancing flurry. Munhoz avoids a knee to the head. Good low kick by Pedro. Hard left by Assuncao. Low kick connects. Stiff jab. Round ends, 10-9 Assuncao.
Round 2: Leg kicks to start things off, Munhoz with more volume. Assuncao right hand and body kick. Assuncao checking kicks and using side kicks. Munhoz stumbles Assuncao with a right hand; Assuncao catches a kick and drives Munhoz down. Pedro spins for a heel hook and Assuncao starts dropping bombs after escaping. Pedro again turns for a leg lock and uses it to stand. Pedro drills the body with a right. Assuncao low kick goes a bit too crotchward, but Pedro shakes it off. Assuncao right and a siff jab. Munhoz with an unchecked leg kick. Assuncao with one of his own, then a straight left. Lead left connects, Munhoz answers with a body kick. Munhoz throws a wheel kick, Assuncao steps in and takes him down. Assuncao trying to drop big shots from guard. Small slam by Assuncao to try to break Pedro's control. Munhoz with a liver shot. Body kick. Nice right from Raphael, who's throwing in combination. Raphael again pushes him back. Nice hook from Raphael and he briefly presses Munhoz against the cage. Assuncao low kick. Head kick lands. Assuncao catches a leg kick. Short right hook; Munhoz is moving forward but generally falling short. Assuncao with left hooks up- and downstairs. Aljamain Sterling vs. Cody Gibson
Round 1: Sterling kicking early, connects with a front kick to the face after some leg kicks. Gibson misses with a spinning heel kick. Sterling steps in to grab a leg, gets denied via underhooks. Gibson weaves his way in, grabs a single, and the pair trade punches from that position before Sterling gets away. Now Cody finishes a single-leg. Aljamain scoots to the wall and stands, then avoids a third takedown. Sterling ducks a kick, almost gets Cody's back, but settles for top half guard. Cody back to full guard. Cody rolls to stand, has to deal with the front headlock. Gibson threatens a leg, gets denied. Sterling hits him with a knee. Sterling steps in and presses Gibson against the cage once more, working knees. Over-under at the moment. Cody tries to reverse position without success .Sterling continues with short knees and punches until the bell. 10-9 Sterling.
Round 2: Gibson low kick lands after he blocks a high kick. Sterling moves into the clinch, eats an uppercut. Gibson catches a leg, tries to kick, elects to shoot. Cody pressing Sterling against the cage, the two trade knees briefly. Cody spins him into a rear waistlock, settles for the body lock. Gibson hits an outside trip, Sterling attempts to counter with a takedown of his own. Gibson teases a front headlock before returning to the clinch and completing a takedown. Sterling with his back against the cage, tries to advance but gives up his back. Gibson gets a hook in for an instant but Sterling stands, reverses, and presses Gibson against the cage. Jockeying for position, Sterling still in the dominant position. Knees from both, short punches by Sterling. Leg kick connects. Gibson answers a knee with a right hand, then ducks a spinning elbow, gets the body lock, and gets a hook in in the scramble. Aljamain gets dominant position against the cage and takes Gibson down, only to get caught in an arm-in guillotine. Sterling gets out at the ten-second mark. 10-9 Gibson.
Round 3: Both men flicking kicks, Sterling moving forward. Sterling ducks in near the fence and takes Givson down. Cody with two butterfly hooks against the cage. Cody looks for deep half, eating short shots from Sterling. Aljamain looking to set up a D'arce as Cody turns into him. He's got a grip on his own bicep but it doesn't look like it's quite deep enough. Aljamain abandons it and they separate. Aljamain ducks for a low single, Cody latches onto a guillotine but loses it as he tries to fall back with it. Sterling in half guard, thumping the body and working to isolate Cody's left arm. Cody tries to stand but gives up his back with eighty seconds left. Sterling gets the body triangle and begins trying to soften Cody up. He briefly gets his arm under Cody's chin but can't get the grip. Sterling landing punches at the bell. 10-9 Sterling.

Zach Makovsky vs. Josh Sampo
Round 1: Sampo looking for a switch kick, Makovsky for a left hand. Sampo leg kick connects. Makovsky grazes Sampo with a left high kick. Makovsky shoots in for a single, transitions to a heavy slam. Sampo regains guard, working mission control. Makovsky attempting to step over into half guard, Sampo switches to traditional guard. Makovsky stands and passes into half guard. Sampo scooting aggressively, regains guard. Makovsky stands over him, avoids an upkick and lands a hard left hand. Scramble ensues and Sampo briefly threatens with an omoplata. Makovsky out of it and Sampo sits with one butterfly hook. Sampo with an overhook, Zach working the left hand. Sampo again kicks him back and lands an upkick. He hits a technical standup but eats a left straight as he separates. Superman punch connects for Fun Size. Sampo steps into the clinch, lands a few good shots, and avoids a foot sweep. Sampo shoots in, is denied, eats a knee to the body. Good knee from Makovsky. Fun round, 10-9 Makovsky.
Round 2: Makovsky with a head kick that nearly connects. Short right hook by Zach. Makovsky changes levels, but Sampo circles out. He tries again and runs the pipe successfully, but Sampo it back up quickly. Good Superman punch from Sampo. Counter right by Sampo after almost eating that head kick again. Spinning backfist falls short, lead-leg hook kick doesn't for Makovsky. Quick level change and he's put Sampo on his back in butterfly guard. Makovsky passes to half guard, Sampo trying to sit out. Sampo nearly gets free, instead forces Zach to stand and looks for upkicks. Zach dives in with a left hand; Sampo uses the chance to stand up but has to negotiate Makovsky's front headlock for a while before separating. Leg kick from Makovsky. Body shot connects. Simultaneous kicks. Makovsky head kick blocked, low kick isn't. Sampo right hand. High kick is blocked and he eats a leg kick. Nice knee tap by Makovsky with fifteen to go and he's back on top in half guard. Sampo grabs a Kimura and attempts to transition into an armbar, but runs out of time. 10-9 Makovsky.
Round 3: Sampo rushes in with three punches that come up short. Sharp counter left off a Sampo leg kick. Josh responds by pushing forward with punches. Simultaneous kicks and Makovsky slips. Sampo establishes on top against the cage. Makovsky looking for deep half guard, abandons it, and Sampo goes back to work in half guard. Zach again looks for deep half to no avail. Sampo drumming away on Zach's body. Makovsky is trying to cage walk, but Sampo keeps staying on his legs. He finally succeeds and worms his leg free of Sampo's grip. Sampo flurry fails to connect. Big left hand by Makovsky. Inside leg kick connects. Makovsky ducks under a punch into a single-leg, gets on top in butterfly guard after a scramble. Sampo tries to spin out but gives up half guard. Elbows from the bottom. Body-body-head by Fun Size. Sampo scrambles up with ten seconds to go but can't capitalize in time. 10-9 Makovsky.

Erik Koch vs. Rafaello Oliveira
Round 1: Oliveira with an inside leg kick and teep. High kick whiffs. Koch's answer hits forearms. Oliveira slips on a flying knee attempt, connects with a body kick. One-two from Koch drops Oliveira onto his back; Koch stands over him in his guard and bombs away violently until Yves Lavigne mercifully steps in. Very impressive.

Round 1: Chavez lands a low kick, eats a glancing right hand counter. Cedeno with a leg kick of his own, then one a bout ten seconds later. Cedeno misses with a heel kick to the body, follows it with a right hand, and slips out. Glancing overhand right from the Cuban. Good body kick connects. Cedeno switching stances regularly. Yosdenis slips a pair of rights. Low kick connects. Chavez swings and steps into the clinch, lands a short right before Yosdenis exits. Chavez leg kicks, ducks a head kick. Chavez steps in for a takedown after taking a low kick to no avail. Another Cedeno low kick and slip. Chavez answers in kind. Chavez catches a hook kick, winds up on top in side control as Cedeno tries to scramble free. Chavez briefly steps into the crucifix. Short blows from the top. Chavez in the mount with forty seconds to go. Yosdenis gives up his back with thirty to go. He stands, gets the body lock, and presses Chavez into the fence to end the round. 10-9 Chavez.
Round 2: Chavez has a low kick caught, then counters a leg kick with a flurry. Cedeno wings an inaccurate overhand. Chavez counters another low kick with a right straight. Cedeno misses the head kick by inches and Chavez uses the chance to get a rear body lock and take him down into side control. Not much action, but he's still on top at the round's halfway mark. Chavez lands short ground-and-pound. He tries to step into mount, gets denied, and Cedeno manages to scramble up into a rear waistlock after giving up his back.
